Some of them would. There's a contingent of upper-middle-class parents-- who have the means for private school* but opt into TC-- who like to pretend that TC isn't a citywide school that serves a diverse population. They'd like to pretend that their kids' little bubble at TC is the norm and not be reminded of real life. The problem is that ACPS enables their behavior; they market to those parents and let them believe that little Jaxon and Braelynn won't have to see or interact with The Less Fortunate.

*Or who don't quite have the means, but want to leave the impression that they do

This is bullshit people, and I call this poster out and yes, our kids recently went through the entire K-12 years at ACPS. This is not the truth.

What lies: "a contingent upper middle class parents who have means for private but opt into TC-who like to pretend that TC isn't a citywide school who serves a diverse population".

As proof this poster is a troll stirring the pot in ACPS for goodness knows what selfish reason. Alexandria City and ACPS values diversity and works well with it. Again, I call on the city to get teacher experts who focus on every student with great motivation. Raise teacher salaries, and empower them without admin telling them what to do. Cut ACPS admin.

NP here and no not BS. It's true.

What do you think it means to "value diversity" or "work well with it"?
It means the white UM parents send their kids there so they can say they value diversity but absolutely expect that their own kids will be protected in the honors/AP/sports bubble that exists. [u]
It's been this way since my child started in ACPS 8 years ago and now that we are moving into TC, I see that it is still very valid.
The diversity and poors help their kids out - their kids can do community service to help this less fortunate and then they can write a compelling college essay about their experience in a diverse school. Every Valedictorian speech in the past few years given by one of these kids has always talked up that angle. It's very popular with a liberal base.

The one thing that is is BS "little Jaxon and Braelynn". The PP is correct that the kids are "Jack, William, Audrey, or Elizabeth"

One is showing their own true colors and beliefs here, not necessarily applicable to "UM parents".

Indeed, we were easily UM when our kids went through ACPS. We never expected protection from honors/AP/sports bubble nor ever asked for it. In fact, my husband and myself worked behind the scenes to buy class room books and supplies for our kids teachers plus volunteered. We helped buy uniforms for those without on the TCW sports teams, paid for them and also picked up fellow classmates on the weekends and drove them to games, tournaments etc (often quite a distance). We were in charge of food and drinks for sports teams and spent a lot of time ensuring all players had relief during long games and all seasons.

Casting a wide brush against UM TCW parents is a fools errand and rings hollow.

I agree, you are showing your true colors.
It sounds like your kids were in the sports bubble.
And without those poor kids, who would you have had to help and then pat yourself on the back about helping?

But ( and I’m gonna use a broad brush here) there is also a wanna be UMC (ish), waspy (wannabe), crew boosting (sorry, not all crew boosters), popped collar contingency at TC
They can’t afford private, so they are making the most of it. I find it more distasteful than ( alleged) gang activity.

Preach. A big part of the attraction for them to TC also is that it reflects well in college applications that their child is coming from a school with (SES, racial) demographics like TC. Never mind that their child is so isolated from the general TC population that it is incidental to them.

What do you recommend they do? Get with your program and move to 99% white N. Arlington? Would you think more highly of those UMC folks then?

Another sick ACPS thread on DCUM with Alexandria residents eating their own in real time.

Regarding your question, pp, sadly families leaving for N. Arlington is a regular occurance and no one, not even our ACPS School Board nor City Council fights to keep them.

You didn't answer the question. You only provided a comment.

APS parent here:
You guys are positively sweet to each other compared to what is happening in APS. Take a peek at some of the (MANY) Arlington threads.
Trust me, the grass isn’t always greener.

You must be a very bitter person, pp, if any kids/parents and participation in high school sports means they live in a "bubble". It's healthy; it's discipline; it's getting along all necessities for adult success. We contribute money to our church too, so by your standards that means it's all "to pat ourselves" on our backs too? It's called tithing, has been done for centuries, and knows no social status. Most churches do good works in our communities and beyond.

ACPS never has enough money and indeed asks for help. Now if people give it voluntarily and without fanfare, fellow ACPS parents rip them apart as self serving?
That's a sick, bitter mind there you have. If others think like you within TCWHS, well then ACPS has a much bigger problem on their hands then they are acknowledging.

By all means, please go to Mr. Ballis, TCWHS Principal and complain about these upper middle class parents you hate, fear and loathe at TCWHS.

+1 People will complain about anything. God forbid your child plays a sport, then s/he is in a "sports bubble." God forbid you contribute to needy school kids; you're only doing good to pat yourself on the back. God forbid to send your kid to TC, when you should be sending your kids to a less diverse school---and if you value diversity, well then aren't you just a fancy-pants UMC fraud!

Another great example of the stupidity that some people will post on DCUM.
