Forum Changes under Consideration

I wouldn't do separate forums for MD and VA public schools. Instead I would drop the "DC" from the title. Seems to me a fair amount of the issues similar plus many people who are in DC public schools are considering moving to MD and VA. It's nice to be able to compare what the issues are. Plus, the private school forum includes schools from all over so ithis would be more comparable.

I was thinking maybe a medical forum might be useful. This could cover diagnostic questions, epidemics, medicine recalls, doctor recs (although I realize we have the topdoctor link, people still ask for doctor/dental recs. fairly often). Just a thought...

Some of us have been hoping for a forum for parenting teens, especially to provide a specific location to discuss the college selection and applying process. Any chance of this happening?

"Um . . I have a child in daycare (yes, I know, horrible) and have two close friends with kids the same age in preschool (full day). It actually is the exact same thing, barring small difference between the programs. We encounter the same issues, deal with the same things . . .

I am the "ugh" poster - that was not a reaction to daycare. It was a reaction to the combo forum idea. I don't think there is anything wrong with daycare, and regret it if my post implied anything like that.

Perhaps it is a regional issue (meaning DC vs MD/VA) as one poster suggested. Many of the posts in the preschool forum relate to applying to competitive preschools, what that entails, and the different styles, etc - as opposed to trying to identify childcare options. ""

LOL I do not understand the difference between preschool and daycare labels either but some women are obsessed with it. My SIL corrects my other nieces (belong to another SIL) when they say they go to school. She corrects them that they go to daycare not preschool because their mommy works all day. She does not know what to do with me because we have a part time nanny and the kids go to a half day preschool. If we do aftercare for a few hours in the afternoon I guess the place reverts back to a daycare all of a sudden. This is stupid.

I do think a separate thread for the preschool acceptance angst ridden DC moms would make sense as no one in MD or VA can fathom this whole sport.

For most people, preschool and day care are functionally the same. And contrary to a PP, there are a lot of daycares/preschools in DC that are full-time (all the feds, for example).

Perhaps a better distinction for parents according to their needs would be:

1) Part-time child care options

2) Full-time child care options

If I thought preschool was just a childcare option, I wouldn't be paying for both a nanny and preschool.

I totally agree with this post, except i would not mind if the preschool acceptance angst was merged with the private school forum into one unbelievable ball of anxiety.

When people are asking about "preschool" for their 2 year old, it's daycare. Combine away!

Jeff, when I had my baby last spring at a hospital in a flyover state, I couldn't log on to DCUM, I'm guessing some of the more risque conversations here led to their firewall software blocking it.

I do think they are the same and that is why I have chosen a full-day preschool instead of a nanny + morning preschool.

I regret the excessive Balkanisation of the fora.

A separate daycare/preschool forum would be a tragedy, tearing apart two largely interchangeable childcare options in a wretched attempt to gratify a few preening snobs who need to justify their financial outlays by imagining an artificial distinction between the two.

How about adding a "homes" forum relating to home repair and maintenance issues including recommendations for contractors, repair services, etc.?
Anonymous
How about Real Estate and Homes for questions about buying/renting and maintaining a home?

Do you even look at either forum? They are currently separate. Why bother commenting if you don't use either of them?

I agree with this suggestion completely! There seem to be more and more threads on college admissions -- but they're all on the private school forum! As if kids in public school don't go to college or something. Usually it starts out as somebody from Sidwell or NCS wanting to know if their non-legacy kid will get into Harvard, and pretty soon it attracts parents from every school out there, public and private, wanting to know about Ivy admissions in general.

Plus there seem to be lots of other questions out there, like the value of SAT prep classes, info on tutors, et cetera.

What would work better? Whining, or being really nice?

If you whine, I'll confuse you with my kids and give you a time out.

We have the "older kids" forum that doesn't get used much. What if it is expanded to also contain teenager and college posts?
