Do you think that we are subsidizing the lower income students with those high fees? If not, that’s a lot to ask since we have such a high number of low income students. Especially since most of them have multiple children at the school. |
| I think the chaperones shouldn’t have to pay for themselves - it should be included in the total cost for everyone. You can’t go without chaperones. |
| As far as I've heard from our school, the PTA pays for all field trips or greatly reduces the cost for families. There is no $ coming from the county with the exception of NSO, not even for low income families. At our title 1 school families have contributed extra to pay for other students. |
Chaperones who care often do a better job than school staff in terms of kids supervision. |
+1 . Assuming Churchill. Run like private. Asked to pay $100 per student by PTA every year, which I did, as well as $25 class fee, which also I did. Then constant emails for additional $20 for various parties, teacher appreciation etc etc and then very expensive field trips. PTA run clubs are also expensive. Ridiculous! Glad that we are done with elementary school! |
Wow. In my teaching career I've never experienced any of those. |
For this reason, I have chaperoned one elementary school field trip in 15 years. |
And the yearbook is charged $30. Other FCPS charge $20 |
Oops. Self correction: parents are charged $30 for a yearbook. |
| $20 to go to GW Mount Vernon. 2nd grade |

Whenever my kids had a field trip, we always doubled the amount asked for and specified that we wanted the money to pay the fee or go into a fund to pay for kids whose families wouldn't be able to afford a trip.

That is so generous and kind. I’m sure the families you helped really appreciated it. |
Our fourth graders went last year. I think the cost was ~$12. |
