Kansas has a 36% OOS enrollment for its most recent freshman class. They draw more kids from out of state than UMD, VT, LSU, NC State and Florida State.

Even back in the 80s there were large contingents from IL-Chicago, MO-St. Louis, even NY plus a large number of intl students from all over the world. The KU journalism school was renowned back then and many well-off families who owned newspapers in Latin America sent their kids to KU to learn the trade. It seemed that many of the kids had parents who went there. I imagine that still happens.
