My plane hit some birds, I was told to brace for impact

OP sorry you had to go through that. No matter the reason, when you think you might actually be about to suddenly die for real, your primal brain and emotions take over, and you feel fear. I can't believe people are shaming you for your reaction. I'm glad everything turned out ok.

I am curious, does anyone have stats on how often planes hit birds? I've always wondered about bird-plane interaction, but I didn't realize planes have to land when they hit them.

Not OP, but I was once on a plane that hit birds as we were about to take off. We came to a screeching halt and sat on the runway for the next 3 hours while they inspected the engine. (This was before all the passenger rights rules were in place, I believe, around 2000/2001)

Don't book an exit row if you're not prepared to take on the responsibilities that come with it.

And you shouldn't have been on the phone!

Chill out about the phone. It only matters when you fly Airbus.

Op I would have been shaken for sure. Think of all those poor people in hawaii who thought they were going to die from a missile strike. Being told to prepare for impact is very very jarring. It's natural for your mind to jump to the worst possible outcomene, especially with limited info. If you find a good therapist, consider bringing your son along. How old is he? Getting a last wishes call from a relative can also be traumatizing. Best of luck in your healing.
