Is it ever o.k. to use the term "Dixie" and not be racist?

The first could be considered racist becomes it is sometimes associated with the Confederate Flag, but the second is just a "feel-good" song about some lovin' on a Tennessee night. Nothing racist about it.

It should be “i wish I WERE in Dixie” in order to be grammatically inoffensive.

Oh, I'm dying!! Too good.

I'm the one who quoted the song ("I wish I WAS in Dixie") in its original form, which as I know is grammatically incorrect. I'm not sure if you're mocking me or the original lyrics, but I hope it's the latter.

We're thinking of getting a puppy and if we do, her name will be Dixie. Why? Because it's an adorable name for a dog. Liberals are some of the dumbest, most shallow people around, if this is what they actually sit around worrying about.

We have a dog named Dixie. She was the tenth puppy born in her litter. Dixie comes from the French "dix" meaning ten.
The Dixie refers to a ten dollar note first issued by small local banks in the French Quarter.
The ignorance on DCUM never fails to amaze me. BTW, I'm a yankee New Englander.

whose favorite song, coincidentally, was Dixie. Even had the band play it at the White House the night the war ended

I think they came from Coldwell Banker real estate b/c we rented a condo in Ocean City from CB), there was a country song called "Christmas in Dixie" === and I always liked it.

Is it o.k. to like a song with the word "Dixie" in it? Or should I not listen to it? The song is all about "snow in the pines... merry christmas from Dixie, and peace on earth tonight..." type of stuff.

well, if you're a racist your self, hatin' ol whitey then yea you might be onto something.

Racist.

Never. You can NEVER use the word Dixie. It's wholly racist. I truly believe if you use that word, you should be thrown in jail. It's THAT evil.

California is on the way to making willfully using the wrong gender pronoun a misdemeanor criminal offense punishable with jail time. They are doing this because hate speech hurts real people. The D-word is no different, and it conjures up horrific painful memories of slavery and Jim Crow.

And before all the constitution freaks jump in about the first amendment, is like to remind you paranoids that the freedom of speech is not without recognized limitations. You can't say slanderous or libelous things. You cant incite riots. You can't shout fire in a crowded theater. So we're constantly defining what can't be said. This is nothing new.

But if you're white and use the N-word or the D-word, you should definitely go to jail. Then some of the inmates can explain to you in great detail, over and over, all night long, every night, the error of your ways. Right up your butt.

Not yet, but just wait a few years. It will be the next confederate flag/statue thing to rally against and remove.

Remove? Set them on fire. Burn them. Arrest anyone who complains. We really need to get rid of all people who don't think like we do. It's really the only way to save the nation.

That's the appropriate response, right there.

That PP is not even aware how much of a control freak he/she sounds like. Forcing your views on others at the point of a sword is the definition of tyranny, yet this person thinks they are the vision of tolerance

You're either being facetious or are certifiably nuts. Hoping it's the former. DIXIE DIXIE DIXIE DIXIE DIXIE DIXIE. DIXIE.

But I disagree about not being ignorant. Anyone so willfully obtuse, so deafened by their own echo chamber, is indeed ignorant. These people scare me.
