| The point of textbooks and workbooks though is that then at least kids would have a fair chance of getting some of this material rather than whatever the teacher decides is important. There is no testing of writing anymore in elementary so no accountability. |
Look, it’s someone who knows nothing about teaching these days! There are these things called standards. That’s what we must teach. They’re on the state DOE page. You might want to have a look. |
And you might want to check out what is actually being taught in a classroom. If no one is checking whether or how the teacher is teaching the standards, they aren't being taught or they aren't being taught well. I'm very aware of standards. They are just a list of things the state of county want taught. They are not tied to certain material being used in the classroom and if there is no assessment on the work or work coming home, there is no accountability on what is being taught. |
| 19:13 again. As proof. Links to various popular standards or programs of study, many of which are not being taught. http://www.corestandards.org/read-the-standards/, http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/, https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-k-6 |
| NP- Rubrics are good starting points but they aren't very useful unless the teachers are explicitly teaching students HOW to write. Looking at mentor texts is fine but writing needs to be explicitly taught. It takes a lot of time and it isn't easy to teach so maybe that's why it isn't being done properly and thoroughly. I was appalled at the writing from my classmates coming from public school when I took writing courses in college. Run on sentences, awful spelling and grammar were par for the course. My roommate would ask me to proofread her work and there wasn't one paragraph without multiple mistakes (and that just the grammar and spelling). Her thought process was all over the place. She didn't even know what a thesis statement was until I explained it to her. Then she turned around and explained it to other students in the class who didn't know. I vowed to never send my kid to a public high school after that. I work 2 jobs so he can go to a private school. It's well worth it. |
I thought the same thing. The teacher doesn't choose what's important. We have the Program of Studies and Standards of Learning. |
Are you equating assessments solely with tests? |
How is this proof that these things aren't being taught? |
They aren't. 18-59 tried to be rude saying I and others didn't know anything about teaching because we didn't know about standards. As 19.34 said, standards are just a starting point on what to teach. They are not curriculum materials. |
Two examples were given for lack of accountability. Not just one. "No assessment on the work or work coming home". Why can't people comprehend what is written? There is another thread on why teachers burn out and lack of materials was a huge reason given. Teachers really are their worst enemy. The parents see the problems. |
I have a hard time believing no assessment is happening during the school day. |
| I’ve had to scan sections of my kid’s math, science, and French textbooks to my sister to help her FCPS kids. She basically gets home from work most evenings and starts teaching them what they didn’t understand or fully learn that day. All with just worksheets and the iffy online resources. Pathetic. |
There are assessments on some things. Often the assessments are poor. The teacher curriculum materials are not strong whether assessments or learning materials. Often due to lack of textbooks and workbooks. Not for every activity, but on a routine basis, there is a lack of material the students can refer to or use. |
I have a lot of notes about student performance in class. For example I have a binder just for notes taken from reading groups. |
| I am not sure what your notes about students have to do with textbooks, workbooks, and other curriculum materials. |
