Well put 2111! I had nearly the same experience but (but black in nearly all white county, and yes everyone tried to hook me up with the Venezuelan exchange student.). With a mixed family in Ward 1, we too are seeking an inclusive school and will happily wait to see how things develop at Cooke.
OP, sounds like you should just give up on getting whatever insights you think you could get from this forum. And now that you've given the impression that Cooke isn't good enough for your child, I find it hard to believe anyone who has the views you seem to seek would want to drag themselves into this quagmire of innuendo. Clearly it is not the right place for you if you have such a visceral reaction to the first week of school. I hope your child will be happy at AppleTree. I've heard great things about it. |
OP simply visited Cooke. her child did not/does not attend Cooke. |
Ha ha--it was the most bizarre thing. I had the biggest crush on the nerdy black guy two rows up (I mean budding scholar) but no one could hear my beating heart. Eventually I ended up marrying someone similar to him 30 years later, but no thanks to those kids who kept sending me for walks with the only other person who looked kinda like me. This was 5th grade so I think matching was still really important. Glad to hear I was not the only one ![]() |
So, I looked at this post because I am interested in Cooke for my DD. Since my daughter is brownish (multiracial-something common around here) my concern is on the involvement of parents and the quality of early childhood/elementary teachers (not just whether they have a master's-not something very affordable on a teacher's salary btw) (not getting into the racebaiting but really think before you type). My sister is a mere bachelor's level teacher with monstesorri training and I would love to have my daughter in her class (she lives out of state with her also multiracial children). Any word on the enthusiasm level and atmosphere at Cooke? First PTA meetings, back to school night, happy children etc?
Also, do you know what the schools do with the bi/multiracial category that is now on the forms? If you check the boxes to designate does it negate the multi? |
@ 23:24. Unfortunately I don't think you are going to get honest answers about HD Cooke on this forum. There is at least one person who seems to have a desire to denigrate the school at every turn. I don't know if they are a bitter parent who does not live in bounds, or a ex-teacher with an axe to grind against the school (or Rhee or whatever). Obviously, they do not have a child at the school.
You'll see in another thread that a parent happy at Cooke was afraid to say so on this forum. I think there are people with kids at Cooke who are happy. And, I hope people like you will think about sending your child there. I know, I'm hoping to send my dd next fall and I have exactly the same concerns as you do about parent involvement. I hope we can be involved together next year. |
21:11 here. This is a big peeve. Although kind of OT for this Cooke thread. I thought DC was supposed to use US census which allows for "more than one". Curious what Rhee puts for her kids. (I know this is not what keeps her up at night, but kind of ironic.) |
I agree, 11:47. Check out the other postings on HD Cooke - you won't get anything useful in this thread. |
