What age go to NYC for the day on own?

Anonymous
Mine went with a friend at 16 to see a show. They caught the 6 am train and made it to the city at 9. Spent the day in the city, saw a matinee show, did dinner, and then caught the evening train home.

Both sets of parents were fine with this because they are travel savvy girls who've been abroad without parents on class trips that allowed for exploration time without chaperones. Also, both girls had been to NYC with parents numerous times and were familiar with the area of the city they were going to and navigating the subway.

I'd be hesitant to send a 16 year old without travel experience or any NYC experience.

One set of parents got them tickets to a Broadway show, and the other got them reservations at a nice restaurant for dinner. We each gave them spending money. They had a great time.

This sounds like SO MUCH FUN!!

It really was. I just imagined them running through the Village holding hands and giggling hysterically, trying to pass for college kids at NYU and flirting, staying up late eating candy, using different accents each time they asked a different person for directions. They're two smart girls who like to get goofy together. The summer before college we sent them to Israel together.

Very cute. These sound like good girls, so it is more than fine.

Other girls, maybe not.

Staying overnight solo? with no chaperones?

Considering that the thread title specifed a day trip, not necessarily.

If they could figure out the logistics of staying overnight (considering most hotels wouldn't allow guests to check in alone at that age), there are circumstances under which I would consider allowing it.
