In Germany, the age of criminal responsibility is 14. Children younger than that are not charged with crimes, full stop.

Diplomatic immunity is fine, but the way some localities would deal with it is to haul her off to the juvenile lockup for the weekend, and then let the lawyers argue immunity to the judge on a Monday morning. That sends a strong message.

A serious trip to the woodshed would also send a strong message. And an expulsion by the school.

The strong message it sends is that we are incompetent fools who can't be bothered to respect diplomatic norms with an important ally and instead decide to take a stand for Justice and the American Way on the back of some disturbed 12-year-old. Let the school and the German embassy handle it. We've alienated enough allies in the last few months.

Who knows what happened before the girl stabbed him (not there is ever an excuse for stabbing but it doesn't have to be an attempt to actually murder her peer.
Let's not jump to any conclusions.. I was a diplomat in DC myself and I know that there is a limit to the diplomatic immunity
A child of one of my co workers was ecpelled and 'advised' to return to their home countey after possession of drugs..
I hope the boy who got stabbed is alright

Just like the boy needs medical treatment, the girl involved clearly needs mental health treatment.

Before expelling her entire family, perhaps a little compassion for all involved - including the students and teachers who may have witnessed this - is in order.

They can get their compassion in Germany. Throw them the hell out.

Take your politics to the political forum. Most of us on current topics thread would like to avoid that. Please leave.

That poster isnt discussing "politics" but the situation being discussed. If you cannot differentiate then you really need to leave

NP. Maybe you need help with reading comprehension... this absolutely was a political dig. This is how every thread ends up.

NP. A well deserved dig.

It is funny to me how a number of posters have referred to this child as a "disturbed" 12 year old. Where does it say she was "disturbed"? Is it because she is some diplomat's kid at a private school? Cause if she was at Ballou or Dunbar no one would be calling her "disturbed".

So, the girl can't be charged, but can the media report the circumstances? It would be good to know if the stabbing just sort of happened, if she was defending herself, if it was really a "stabbing" with the intent to maim or kill, or was it a one inch pencil puncture?

I wonder if the kids involved was Mexican or Muslim, and not German if all this talk of "wait and see" and "compassion" for the person who did the stabbing would be dripping off the page? Me thinks not!

I mean... a 12 year old stabbed another kid with a pair of scissors. What kind of wound are we talking here? Was she going for the jugular, or did she poke a kid in the arm enough to draw blood? Two different scenarios. Not to excuse the behavior in any way but I'm wondering how serious this actually was.

Stabbed twice in shoulder. Student went to hospital. Not life threatening. Serious enough for police to investigate.

I believe MPD (DC police) wer ecalled, so the police report should be available through a FOIA.
