Would you be annoyed if neighbors copied your entire landscaping design?

It is irritating. And weird of the neighbor. But I agree you should let it go - and take the advice to do something to change and freshen your landscaping up ...

OP here. Appreciate the constructive feedback and agree that it is better to have neighbors that invest in their property than the other extreme. I'll leave it at imitation is a form of flattery.

To the weirdo above, if this is your cry for help, recommend you go find some.

are you 5 years old? I have never heard an adult use "weirdo". For your own sake, please do not again. I am embarrassed for you.

NP. Lots of adults use the term "weirdo." Learn to capitalize the beginning of your sentences and properly punctuate with quotation marks. I am embarrassed for you.

Yes, that would really annoy me. Some people have no imagination or creativity though (many of the posters on this board) so they have to resort to thievery

Your lawns are not going to look the same going forward. Some plants will die and be replaced. You will prune your trees and your neighbor will not. Your tree is in the sun and his is not. The water drains into his driveway and will ruin his pavers, etc. You will plant annuals and expand your front garden and he will not. He will but up gazing balls and flamingos and you will not. Or maybe you will do that and he will copy you. I think this could be fun.

^ Does he have the same cars as you do in the driveway?

C'mon OP! I would be flattered. Also, you should go over and compliment their yard. It is great they did this as visual unity is rare but looks great.

Some call it "visual unity", others "cookie cutter". I'm suspecting many of the people who think this is great or no big deal live in cookie cutter subdivisions.

Op you are ridiculous. You don't own this "design". You clearly are unfamiliar with landscaping. I'm so glad I don't live near you.

Anonymous wrote:They may have hired your landscaping company and said "we like their house, do something like that." And of course the company would have your design and it would be cheapest for them to just cookie cutter it. I would take it as flattery, OP.

I think this is a possible explanation.

Do you know how many landscape projects, especially simple ones like around a porch or sidewalk look the same in a similar area? A ton. Only certain plants grow in some areas, you likely have the same dirt and same amount of sun exposure and land slope. It is likely they told their landscapers they liked the look of yours or wanted XYZ and ended up with something similar. If they repainted their house to your color and actively tried to copy your entire curb appeal, then i would side eye it but really. Who cares.

I would be annoyed too.

Many years ago a friend's parents discussed something similar - they hired an architect at a pretty significant expense to add an expansion to their house. A friend/neighbor asked to borrow the plans so they could look it over, saying they were considering an expansion. Turns out, they copied the plans without permission and used it in their own expansion, without asking whether they could and/or offering the split costs of the architect. My friend's parents were pissed but also couldn't do much about it.

NP - She hit a nerve me thinks!

This is actually really smart - skip the landscape designed and hire someone affordable who can copy what someone else did.

Thanks OP!

I would just be glad that they're taking good care of their property and making your neighborhood look nicer. This is just not a big deal.

You mean, our weeds and everything? Down to the last dandelion?

OK, seriously, if I had my druthers and could finally implement my dream landscape, I WOULD be annoyed if someone copied me. It's deleterious for the neighborhood to have cookie cutter stuff. Everyone needs to be a little creative.

Keep your mouth shut until you see the completed work - I'm sure something in there is different. They wouldn't be THAT stupid.

OP here, thanks for the post! I can't stop laughing about the weeds LOL! I can proudly state my weeds remain original.

You hit the nail on the head about being a little creative. I think it's fine to find inspiration from others and incorporate elements like some posters mentioned; in this situation though it was a bit excessive on the "influence." Will do as others suggested and find ways to keep differentiated.

I would share it with your designer/ landscaping team and mention that you would love their ideas on how to distinguish your property. They will at least get a big laugh out of it.
