If you are pagan

Where did they come up with such a creepy ritual? Not from Jesus I am sure!

NP. Please do tell us again about how atheists are so much more kind, compassionate, tolerant, accepting, and all-around wonderful folks compared to people of faith. Speaking of fairy tales!

Did I say I’m an atheist? I am a confirmed Catholic.

So you were confirmed as a preteen. And since then, what?

Why are you bringing atheists into this discussion? It's about pagans, and then someone arrogantly (and incorrectly) chimed in to suggest that paganism was objectively inferior in validity than Christianity. The fact remains that ALL religions/mythologies/etc are equally "odd" and believable--or unbelievable. They are ALL subjectively "truth" or fake, depending on your personal conditioning. No one mentioned atheism, except you.

Ok, then why is pp dragging Christianity into the discussion, just to abuse it? This thread is about paganism, yes, yet it’s fair game to abuse Christians but not fair game to abuse atheists. Hypocrisy.

This forum is total sh!t. Seriously. “Let’s drag Christianity in so we can piss on it but then get all outraged when somebody mentions atheists.”

What the hell? What is wrong with you hypocrites?

I’m out of here. You bigots aren’t worth any more of my time. Enjoy your bigoted circle jerk.

Bullish!t. You’ve been an atheist since when, age 20? Or tell us what age. The weasely behavior of atheists here is disgusting and hardly a recommendation for the supposed “compassion” and moral superiority you like to claim.

You use the past tense. You’re no longer Catholic or Christian, and you mock it.

The first person to turn nasty and judgmental in this thread was a Christian, on the first page.

I actually agree with that—the “strange, sad lives” comment was judgy and wrong.

You, however, took it to a whole new level of bigotry with your sneering parody, and then your lies about being Catholic although you apparently havn’t participated in that ritual since you were “a Little girl.” Congrats, you—an atheist—raised the bar for being a juvenile, bigoted liar.

Bottom line: posters from two different paths that claim compassion and tolerance have shown themselves to be anything but. I’m not Catholic and never have been, btw.

I am not the pp who posted the "parody" (it's not a parody btw - it's how rituals are seen through different eyes). The point is that every internal religious ritual and concept looks odd and strange to someone from the outside. How pp described communion (I think?) is precisely what it looks like to outsiders. I grew up Muslim, and I'm sure the same is true - people look at our form or prayers, or recitations, or what have you - and find it totally odd when seen with outside eyes. That's fine, it doesn't offend me at all.

It doesn't have to be religion - you look at aspects of culture (present or historical) and that's why people often have such a fascination with other cultures, because it's so different from us. It just takes being able to step outside of yourself to realize that your own behaviors, rituals, beliefs, etc... which are totally normal and make sense to you... are bizarre and strange to someone else.

Lifelong practicing Catholic from a family that includes clergy. I write above about pagans I know. Not all Christians feel threatened by paganism or atheism. If I thought either of the pagans I knew could undergo a true conversion to Christianity and be good Christians, great. I don’t think either is capable of running that software so to speak. But both are trying to be very good human beings according to the moral code that calls to them. I think trying to be good trumps smugly thinking you are saved every single time. I also appreciate that they feel the tug of the spiritual and are unashamed to respond to it. Being spiritual of any flavor is deeply derided in this area generally and my profession in particular. I see atheism as I see asexuality. I don’t understand it, but if they don’t have those urges, they don’t have them. However, I do take umbrage when someone says having those urges is unnatural, a sign of not being evolved, juvenile, or a waste of time. You do you and let me do me.

I’m 6:14. If you read my post again, I’m not offended or threatened by pagans or atheists. Far from it!

I am, however, offended by sh!tty behavior on the interwebs. This is why I called out the Christian on the first page and especially the juvenile, sneering Atheist who shows up in this forum a lot to belittle others. If you’re going to claim you have the high road—and these two posters seem to think they have a lock on the “truth”—then at least take the high road.

Even the Pope said , in effect, that God won't turn good and loving people (incl. atheists) away from Heaven because they re not Christians.

Emphasis on the “good and loving” aspect. A Christian who judges others, or an atheist who is constantly being nasty and then lies about being Catholic, are probably not what he had in mind. A pagan/atheist/Christian who is good and loving seems exactly what the pope had in mind when he talked about entry to heaven.

Different person here, but what I want to take away from this quoted post is - why is Christianity or atheism being discussed at all? Just why? This was supposed to be a thread about paganism, yet only one pagan seems to have responded in a 4-page thread that's just been a nasty argument between fundie Christians and judgy atheists and a bunch of other angry people in between.

If people posting here are not pagan, why can't you just shut up and leave the thread?

I'm interested to hear what a Pagan believes.
