Parents of HS students, why don't more kids do the 2+2 prgm to get into UVA/WM/VT (comm col first)

Go to the best school you can afford that also feels like the right fit. Period. My high-stats kid didn't even apply to UVA, VT or JMU; she wanted something entirely different in size/scope/campus feel. She's had an amazing experience at UMW. There are high achieving kids at ALL of the VA schools.

This.

I wish he would have that freshman experience away at a second rate college but this is what he insists on. I'm really disappointed but we'll save money I guess.

Maybe your kid knows who he is and knows why he got the 3.3. He has to change that, and cc is a good place to do it.

That's a good point.

1560 SAT and 3.3 GPA - is this correct?

+100 Ours applied to a couple of them for her own personal pride (and was accepted) but really wanted something entirely different. She chose a school out of state and a few hours away that is an absolute perfect fit for her but one DCUM would turn its nose up at. For her, fit was key. She would have been miserable at a large state college.

OP - - Nothing is Guaranteed.

Besides, maybe the grade distribution allots for only 10% of students in a particular class to get an A, a class needed for the transfer arrangement. Are you so foolish to think anyone can do it, that anyone can do it if only they would make the decision?

I'm guessing all these rah-rah community college posters are being asked/enlisted to promote the program.

Another thing to consider is whether your DC will transition easily to one of those schools as an upperclassman. Some kids do better with this than others, especially given that by junior year at large schools kids are living in friend groups in apartments.

No one said it was an easy way to get there--do you really think that all the qualified kids get in from high school? It is an option of another way to get in. That simple. It works for some. It is not impossible to achieve.

Medical schools do not like to see science classes from a CC. It would be impossible to take all the science retirements in a 2 year period.

I have a friend who went to med school after the cc route. she just took a few post-grad science classes. with otherwise good grades and scores it's not going to matter.

I went to CC for the first two years and then transferred to a 4 year university for a last two years. Best decision for me socially and financially. I was able to finish my degree with hardly any debt (this was 20 years ago so not sure that would be feasible now). I had great grades from the CC so it helped me get into a competitive program at the university. The professors at the CC were wonderful. I went onto graduate school. Having the CC on my transcript did not affect my chances getting into graduate school.

There's UVA Wise, too. I think there's some kind of deal that you do 2 years at Wise then the last two in Cville. The drawback, I suppose, would be having to spend 2 years in the middle of nowhere vs. NoVa.

For those with kids that are so socially awkward, what the heck? Maybe it's time to address those issues before the kids are 18.

Even if you include living costs?
