How important are internships for college? What are your college freshmen doing this summer?

I hire college interns and really only look at students for the summer after junior year when they've actually had some solid coursework in the field, good idea of what they want to do, etc.

My brother has his first internship this summer - summer between junior and senior year. The previous two summers he worked.

Mine is doing an internship this year but isn't that also work? He has to go to work and gets paid.

DC's professor did come through with a terrific internship opportunity for this summer. Thank you all for your advice an encouragement!

Congrats to your son and to you, OP!

Excellent -- congrats! I'm a college career director who wrote earlier. Internships are important after every year of college and yes, they are attainable, but the student generally has to find his/her own opportunities

Thank you so much for your advice. The internship is part time, unpaid (although it provides a small stipend) , but is exactly in DC's major/career plans. Hopefully DC will also find a part time job to earn some spending $.

Sure, but I think orgs treat interns with kid gloves - regular employees, not so much.

My son got an internship with a social justice organization. He feels very strongly about the issues they address. However, having just finished his freshman year, it has nothing to do with his major.
