Why are there so many "highly religious" people in the South?

Well, I actually have relatives in the South and not all are "religious". The regious ones are that way b/c they don't rely on credit and prescription meds for their survival and happiness. They rely on God.

Geez. I grew up in DC and my mother dragged me to church every darned Sunday but i just couldn't get anything out of it. I'm a pretty moral and good person but I didnt like the sexism and hippocracy of the church (the meanest most self centered people go to church the most), didn't get anything out of praying, and I dont 'fear anything' including god. I don't understand people who go for all of this stuff verbatim. Not even 15 years of Catholic school could make me a robot - I'd much rather be known as a slut.

And I was a virgin through high school - but that's really no one's damned business but my own.

And there's too much of this from these highly religious people - it's like they want the girls to be virgins so they can have them for themselves.

I'm not an athiest. Not fearing god doesn't mean I dont believe there isn't one. I dont think that any one religions 'god' is more valuable than another one's either though.
Though I don't know maybe I care so little for formal religion maybe you could describe me that way - but I don't 'believe' in atheism enough for that label either.

It's not strange in the society in which we currently live where being religious is the norm. There are lots of "a" words that are legitimate but not used very much, e.g., apolitical, asymptomatic (used more by physicians), asexual.

I agree with Sam Harris's point, but also think we're not there yet when it comes to religious belief. The examples he used are of things that most people already don't believe in.

When most people don't believe in god, maybe the use of atheism and agnosticism will be as rare as non-alchemist. That could take a long time.

Wouldn't that be agnosticism? Agnostics generally make no assertions. Atheists assert that there is no God. If I believe that there isn't an invisible flying walrus hovering over my roof, that's still a belief, even if it's a belief that something doesn't exist.

Not sure thst 'being religious' is the norm in the DC area. Most people just go to church as a social thing, and they go through the motions but not too many people are seriously religious here.

The church teachings amount to an emotional 'female genital circumcision/cutting' as these church people brainwash girls to believe that their own sexual pleasure is 'wrong'.

2. Women, you will irreparably damage your body and soul if you have sex. Jesus forgives sins, but it's really hard for him to forgive people who have sex. Plus he doesn't like to.
3. Women, a good man will not want you if you have sex with people, and then where would you be? Remember your place in life entirely relies on a man to validate your existence.
4. Boys, your sexuality is basically good, but try not to let women destroy you with their bad sexuality.

My hope is that I am on the fringe in having experienced numerous purity talks that sound like this tweet, but I know too many people who have been hurt and trapped in guilt and shame because of this type of message.
