Can I do anything to help my husband with his issue?

If you truly did vote for Hillary, I applaud you for your empathy for those who have conservative preferences. If DCUM is representative, you are a rarity among liberals.

To others, think of this from the cop's perspective. He is, by the poster's admission, a decent and good guy, and thus it can be extrapolated that he chose a helping profession for altruistic reasons, and possibly even risks his life daily for the sake of his community. Now, harken back (I was a lit undergrad, LOL) to the days of the Democratic convention. On the first night, Hillary trotted out the "Mothers of the Whatever" - black women who had lost their sons to police action, even though these sons were, for the most part, in open defiance of police orders. To me, it was a blatant ploy to win over black voters by siding with them over the police. It was not until the fourth night, when apparently Hillary's advisors really to what extent she was dissing cops, that they honored the wife of a fallen police officer. If I were a cop, I wouldn't have voted for her, either.

These "cop sympathy" posters are CLEARLY all white folks. What if you are a cop/LEO AND a minority? What if you are high-ranking and struggle to manage and have authority over a group of people who don't see the world the ssme way you do when your uniform/badge comes off at 6:00 every evening? What if your neighbors have called the neighborhood watch on YOU because you were out for an evening jog in your off-duty attire of sweats and a hoodie? Please don't get it twisted, there is a lot of diversity in law enforcement in the Washington DC area and it is very prevalent that minority law enforcement officers and officials DON'T vote Republican, and know what it feels like to be on BOTH sides of the fence, and it sucks on both sides.

Your husband needs to get out of his bubble.

Most Trump voters aren't a bunch of evil, racists scumbags. But you wouldn't know that if you only surround yourself with like minded people and listed to reassuring media. I live in a purple state and have friends from both sides of the aisle. All normal folks. We can agree to disagree on politics.

And I say this as someone who thinks Trump is a vile, ignorant snake-oil salesman.

This.

The election prompted a lot of us to reevaluate friendships. Who wants to be friends with someone who condones Trump's nonsense?

FWIW, I don't miss the people I edited from my life. I suspect your husband won't either.

You don't know what J was posting on FB during the election. Clearly he said or liked something (or probably multiple things) that caused her husband to change his opinion of his friend.

I just noticed that my uncle liked a recent commentary defending Bill O'Reilly...that immediately colored my opinion of my uncle.

Racism and sexism are not deserving of "understanding and tolerance." You can kid yourself all you want, but peel away the layers of excuses and justifications and deflections, and that is what is behind a lot of Trump support. I think OP's husband is smart to keep his distance from his old friend right now if he wants to keep the friendship in the long term. We can deal with the negative aspects of people we care for, but sometimes it's just easier from a distance. Leave it alone, OP. They'll probably see each other some time in the future.

Yeah, my brother can relate. He was minding his own business, jogging in his sweats and a hoodie, when all of a sudden a cop car pulled up and ordered him to stop, hands up. Apparently, some people called the cops because my brother looked "suspicious."

Oh, I forgot to mention that my brother is white.

The research is showing that racism was a better predictor of Trump support than, say, economics. That said, sometimes people were just brought up as racists -- it's not their fault. It's not going to get better if non-racists disengage and let Trump supporters continue to fall deeper inside their white, Fox News insulated bubble.

So, your DH should continue to engage his friend and push back hard if he starts (for example) talking trash about Muslims or Mexicans.

Jesus. Most people who voted for Trump do not think this way! Hillary sucked as a candidate. Trump is actually getting things done that we care about. MOAB on ISIS. Got the Americans freed from Egyptian prison. A good Supreme Court nominee confirmed. My vote for Trump had nothing to do with racism.

I never heard of Trump voters cutting relationships with Hillary voters. Only the other way around. It's pathetic
