Ugh I think I said the wrong thing and offended someone tonight.

This.

Was she expecting me to say it's like the host? Or was she just gonna be upset regardless?

Op here, I know the point of Passover is to recall the Jews escaping Egyptian slavery but she talked to me like I had no idea what that was. I just listened intently but the whole time I was thinking 1. Christians have this story too, it's in the Bible. And 2, I'm black, I understand the gravity of slavery, no need to keep hammering it into me like I don't get it.

Maybe she doesn't know many gentiles?

I think it's funny she would assume you'd never tried Matzoh before-- It was always a springtime tradition (with butter, cinnamon and sugar) growing up and I am born-and-bred Episcopalian.

I'm Jewish (born-and-bred, as you would say) and I don't know any jews who used cinnamon and sugar, unless they're making matzoh brei.

I'm white and Jewish, and have been SHOCKED to find out some people don't know jews were slaves at all. Or don't believe that when they hear it. Also, please keep in mind that Judaism existed way before any of the Christian religions, so Judaism is woven into the Christian bibles. But when Jewish kids go to hebrew school we're ONLY studying Judaism. Other religious never come up, because they didn't exist when our religion started. So we often have no idea what you may know or not know in terms of religion.

I am Slavic and shocked that people don't know Slavs were slaves, and that the origin of the word comes from Slav. Sure, Jewish people were enslaved before that we know of in recorded history, but let's not make it a competition. I am also shocked that most of the people don't know many Slavs were in concentration camps, (including my own grandfather). I am not at all making it equal the genocide that happened to Jewish people(also appalled that here nobody knows about pogroms and Jewish people being persecuted in Europe in every century and decade prior to Nazi rule in Germany.) Nobody with any education should dispute that Christianity is a product of Judaism. I mean what exactly is the Old Testament? How can anybody be so ignorant as not to know that the Sacred Scriptures of Judaism are the Old Testament? Technically Christians are disciples of Judaism. As an Orthodox Christian, we also don't study much other than the history of other branches of Christianity as we claim to have kept it as it meant to be. Also, why would you study other religions in hebrew school?

Your answer was not dumb. That aunt has no tact and, like a previous poster said, she was looking for a fight.

Most people will say it tastes like an unsalted Saltine cracker. And of course she could jump on even that harmless comparison and make you feel as if you'd been offensive because of the history. Try to let it go. The family are surely used to her.
