Got into one of HYPS early. (Excellent SATs + other std tests; top 3rd of class at competitive magnet, but very strong math grades.) We were pleasantly surprised; thought grades/class rank would sink her.

Female was the hook

How do you play soccer and cross country in high school at the same time?? Aren't they both fall sports?

it depends on how strong of a runner a kid is- if he's naturally a ridiculous endurance athlete, xc coaches might allow a kid to just run races (i did this for track - i played tennis in the spring but was allowed to run events without really having to go to track practice due to just being purely fast enough to make the team).

In VA schools they are different seasons. In our MCPS you couldn't be on 2 teams in a season. DC was a very strong runner and wasn't allowed to just run XC races during soccer season. In the spring he did club soccer at the same time as track which was challenging physically and schedule wise.

Because each school only had 10,000-20,000 women to choose from among.

It's not the extracurriculars, it's just proving you're outgoing and competitive and have the ability to frame yourself. Great numbers and a lot of shameless bullshitting is how unhooked kids get into T30 colleges.
