| PP you are right- government does NOT have paid maternity leave, not even STD. You can cover your leave with annual and up to six weeks of sick leave. Also Feds are exempt from the 16-weeks of FMLA required by DC, and are covered by the lower 12 week FMLA. |

I used to be a reporter, regularly working evenings and weekends. I switched to PR and rarely work late, never work weekends, have a lot of flexibility in leaving if I have to.
When I was young, I always envisioned myself a journalist. But as a mother, I found the lifestyle incompatible. Not saying all journalism jobs are incompatible... but let's face it. In general, the industry is low pay and high stress with crazy unpredictable hours. Soon after I changed jobs, I attended a dinner where notable journalists were receiving awards for their lifetimes of achievement. I knew I made the right decision when each person there acknowledged their family's sacrifices in allowing them to make it in the field. |
