You are a nut.

Nut 2 here: call the police or go pay a visit next door with a baseball bat... I think the former is within the law and won't get you in trouble.

I would have called the police immediately. The kid could be a real weirdo with a gun in his home.

First nut here. Thanks for the back up.

If my son and a friend got in a fight and yelled at each other " I am going to kill you" then we have a talk. But a note, left at your house, by who knows, saying I will kill" my sons name". Police get called. Sorry, but kids can be crazy and adults can use construction paper. I would tell the police I realize it could be a kid acting out, but I would call them.

I would call the police as well. Sounds like the neighbor girls wrote it.

Shortly after we moved in to our house, someone wrote "Please kill yourself" on our door. Unfortunately, they'd also hit a few other houses on the street with various messages, including a racially charged one on a black family's home. We're also an interracial family, but didn't have kids at the time. The police thought it was just stupid kids and nothing else has happened since then.

Right but you got the police involved.

The school has nothing to do with this. It blows my mind that people want to drag them into every issue that involves children.
If my adult neighbor, friend of DH did something similar during non-work hours and non-work related, my first response wouldn't be "let's contact their employer!"

This thread has made me laugh out loud. Don't you think that police officers have real things to do? I mean, don't you PREFER that they be out there actually policing crime?

I'm trying to imagine the look on the police officers face as they take your report and file your "evidence".

This may be a harmless prank (and most likely is) but the school will be able to handle it and should know if there is animosity among some students. Also, this may not be the first time this child has done something like this, so it's important to loop in the school.

Please don't listen to the others who are saying ignore it- it could be part of a more serious pattern.

OP's first grader THINKS he knows who did it. For crying out loud, now you want to go on a witch hunt! Yeah. When the principal calls your house, I'm sure you'll be delighted the opinion of a first grader was taken that it was part of a more serious pattern.

The note was signed. The kid can probably figure out which Jeffrey did it.

Right! The Jeffrey who is the murder mastermind. Oh, and signs his own threat letters.

Agreeing with the both of you. The pps saying to ignore it or who think it's a funny and harmless prank are probably the same people who when they see headlines of children harming another child ask where the adults and why didn't they do anything?
OP I would contact the school and the police.

This has nothing to do with the school. Either do nothing if you think it's a joke or call the police if you think it's a threat. Not sure how people are tying the school to this.

The will act interested because unfortunately they deal with psycho mothers all the time. They will look serious, doodle on a note pad, maybe even offer to talk to the young "offender" and his parents. But they will definitely consider it a waste of time and resources. They deal with this kind of crazy every day.

There are court cases that disagree with you.

Not a nut. I'd consider calling the police, too.

You don't need to call 911 but you do need to let the police know your kid has received a written threat. Simple. Doesn't have to be a big drama just go down to the police station and let someone write it up.

You've then marked it, officially. It could be a one off and never a problem again, or it could be the start of a bigger problem, either way, you've marked it in a timely manner.

Yes

+1

If this boy is exhibiting other psychotic behaviors is it good to have a record.
