I wondered this myself. The only iconic British athletes that come to mind are the guys in Chariots of Fire.

Great Britain is second in the medal count.

that's fine, but OP's original comment reeks of colonialism.

Wasn't that exactly the point?

NP here. It probably does tie back to British influence, since they are notorious for inventing games and then getting their a$$es kicked in them by the rest of the world! Cricket, soccer, rugby

lol... my British DH says the exact same thing.

To hoist itself out of poverty, India wisely decided to focus on academics, particularly math, science and technology. Give them a few more years to start on athletics.

Yes, they seriously kick our butt when it comes to STEM. I'd rather have a larger, better educated population, than a handful of Olympic medal winners.

Ryan Lochte and Hope Solo.

India says "No, thank you" They would rather concentrate on academic achievement. They would rather have STEM educated and globally employable citizens now instead of Olympic medals. In a decade or two they can start concentrating on sports.

As they say, swing and a miss.

To be sure, cricket isn't an Olympic sport.

I'm tired of removing ignorant posts that have nothing to do with sports from this thread. So, I'm putting it out of my misery.
