Estimates are from general contractors or kitchen and bath contractors--no high end design firms. We are not moving any appliances and knocking down walls, just new cabs and granite counters, adding an island, hardwood floors, and recessed lighting. The cabs we are looking at are probably "mid-range" and appliances are modestly priced from Sears. I guess I could just buy inexpensive cabinets from hd or lowes and have a contractor install them?
If you are only staying in your house a few years, do not spend 50k on a new kitchen. Look at Ikea. We saved a lot going with Ikea, bought floor model appliances at a local store. I used a carpenter, not a contractor. DH and I assembled the cabinets and the carpnter installed them and the appliances. A plumber hooked up the sink and an electrician did the undercab lights. Cost about 11k.
