Diagnosing high functioning autism in an older child

Thank you so much for all of the kind replies and helpful responses. I will try to not be too hard on myself but I am surprised that this is being suggested now after so many years...

OP, one thing worth keeping in mind is that your child is the same person today that he was yesterday and the day before that and last week. In other words, don't let a diagnosis define him or your relationship with him - or your faith in him.

Haven't read all the posts, but has inattentive ADHD been ruled out? There are common symptoms between inattentive ADHD and Asperger's or HFA. My son has inattentive ADHD, and has Aspie tendencies but does not have a formal HFA diagnosis, since for now (he is 11), his ADHD meds are sufficient to help him *socially* and with his processing speed and focus.

No, it hasn't been ruled out.
