It is only a drop out rate if the kids don't graduate from high school at all. Attrition =/= dropout. Banneker has been judged on how many grades pass the IB exam, AP results and college acceptance and scholarships, benchmarks they do well on. Perhaps another criteria should be added. The Tier system for charters factor attrition, test scores, and students academic growth over time. |
True for a whole school system, but not how things are calculated at the school level. The single most obvious metric for a high school is Graduation Rate. |

I'm a parent of 2 boys too, one of my sons is a junior at Banneker. It is true though, in general boys underperform academically compared to girls. It would be interesting to know the percentage of boys that start as freshman at Banneker and the percentage that stick through and graduate as seniors and then compare the same with girls. |

If your student is an athlete, is interested in music, or theater, or any other extracuriculars, Wilson may be the best choice. SWW is great academically, but because of its size and academic focus, there is not much room for clubs, sports, and other activities.
Wilson is big - there are plenty of good students, but plenty of bad students too. And not a lot of hand-holding. Your child needs to be mature enough and disciplined enough to handle the many options - good and bad - available at Wilson. |
Well, that's an obvious joke, accomplished at the expense of dozens of "kindly-counselled-out" kids |
Curious - is McKinley Tech (given application-only nature, test scores and general rep) at all in the conversations among highly achieving STEM students at Deal? I imagine not given geography alone but am curious. |
| I know one sophomore at McKinley who went to middle school at Deal. I can't imagine he's the only one. |
Getting there is inconvenient, but based on on the information available on line, Wilson also seems to have more to offer in courses and clubs. My DC will look into MT when the time comes though, as you never know if everything available is on line. But he can get all he needs for STEM at Wilson, plus his sport, and can walk there. That is hard to top or trade for over an hour each way by Metro. |
+1. My neighbor's kid is at MT. Is in-boundary for Wilson, although EOTP, so commute isn't as bad. |
My neighbor's kid just graduated from MT (after going to Deal). Also IB via EOTP. He's now at a very good university. |
