Do you let your kids have playdates in homes with guns?

Anonymous
Lots of people own guns. I would not be that concerned unless the kids in question are boys. They tend to get into guns more often than girls and get into trouble--and they will know if the guns are on a high shelf or not.

I would ask if they have guns and how they are secured in the home, not whether they have them. Would assume many people in the DC area have guns and may or may not want you to know.

Wow. This makes me so angry I can barely think.

I hope you I never have occasion to meet you and that my children never go to your house. If they did and anything happened to them with that gun that you lied about you better believe your life would not be with living.

That's fine I think people who ask me if I own guns are crazy scum and that's why I don't have any qualms about lying to them.

Fuck you, gun-hating nutcases.

We Have multiple family play dates at our house all the time, and I would assume anyone coming over would know we have guns because my DH is an avid hunter, we have deer heads on our walls and we routinely serve venison. No one has ever asked us about our guns but we would obviously be truthful if they did. NO guns are ever left out, they are always locked away in safes, we have a fingerprint safe in the bedroom, and a fort Knox safe in our hunting gear/gym room, which is also kept locked. It kills me whenever I read in the news about a child finding an accessible gun in a house, there is no excuse for that, EVER.

Fuck you, you lying piece of shit. You are utterly disgusting and I hope your child finds that gun and shoots you rather than himself or any other innocent child and you learn a lesson. You are a delusional bitch and i have no qualms about calling you out for it.

And for the record, having guns in the home would not be a reason in and of itself for me to immediately refuse to visit your home but being a lying sack of shit absolutely would be. How DARE you take away the right of a parent to make their own judgment. If you can't bring yourself to tell the truth just decline the play date. You are disgusting.

This is the kind of nut case we're dealing with here folks. Let's hope she didn't learn her lesson the same way as this idiot mom. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/03/09/my-4-year-old-gets-jacked-up-to-target-shoot-gun-loving-mom-brags-hours-before-her-little-boy-shoots-her/

I think the pp is a troll to get us riled up.

We own a ton of guns (DH works in the industry) and I have no issue explaining how our firearms are kept. We have been speaking with our kids about firearm safety since they were very young. We have some very Liberal friends who have no concerns about their kids playing here, but I'm sure that's because they have come to know us well and consider us trustworthy.

I would not let my kid play in a house where there is a gun, not knowingly.

Look, think about it like this. Imagine your most expensive, treasured jewelry. Wedding rings, grandmother's pearls, vintage diamonds. Do you leave those out for kids to find and play with? No. You care for them and keep them put up because they are not for kids. Same with guns. Most (the vast majority) of gun owners respect their guns and take care of them which includes storing them safely and properly. My husband would never let my kids play with one of his guns even if it was empty because it's an expensive and delicate thing they have no business playing with. Most kids who shoot themselves are the children of morons who leave their guns lying around carelessly, not upper middle class kids who found a loaded gun in the living room on a play date. If someone tells you they have guns and they are safely secured and out of reach of kids, trust me, the guns are safe and so are the kids. Gun owners don't want their or your kids touching or messing with their guns anymore than you do.

I ask if they have guns and is they are secured. The second question is important because it makes it clear that I'm not going to say no to the playdate as long as they are stored safely.

Everyone has said no so far and no one has been offended. I don't know if they're lying. I imagine even if they are, they probably took a moment to think about how their guns are stored. If they have guns and are stored properly, I'm ok with my kids playing there.

It's not part of my culture (and by that I just mean how I was raised, not that I'm from some where else), but I understand that there isn't a way to avoid gun owners in the US. Some of our good friends have guns, and I'm fine with it.
