Private schools tuitions costs question

My goodness, Americans and math. $40k? Who pays that? Very few. Just like private colleges which are right around $60K. Check the % receiving FA and the average award. Same with colleges. The $40k is the starter rate. If they accept will you actually pay that amount? It depends. Some have sloppy cash and don't really care while others are working rich. Unless your child has some type of athletic talent or is a prodigy of some sort you're stuck. Kind of sad.
First you're still paying taxes for public and then you're getting hammered by private school tuition. You can get accepted by one and then transfer and if you make it known it's about cash you might catch a break. Colleges are much more amenable and cognizant of that. Your child attends for one year and then transfers because Of cost of travel. Make that known and if your DC is a solid upstanding citizen expect to see 25% drop off of your tuition. Remember, everything is negotiable. You're not actually getting cash you're not being charged as much. |

Yes it does. At least it did when DD came a few years ago. You pay a deposit that does not go towards current year tuition but I believe you get it back when you graduate - or maybe it gets applied to senior year? DD will be a senior this coming year so I guess we will find out. I can't recall what it was though - maybe $1500. It's crazy. |

You are crazy (aka very few my a$$). More people at the elite privates pay the full amount than the number of families that get FA or any other assistance. Plus, few elite privates give any $$ for any type of "prodigy" other than athletic talent and even that is usually under the guise of FA. A family with a HHI over $300,000-$400,000 isn't going to get any off even if their kid is the best lax player since the Paul Rabill. |

Do you mean the DCUM middle class? The ones who struggle to pay for their private school tuition, beach house and luxury vehicles, that middle class? |

Right. Comparing private secondary schools to colleges isn't a proper comparison. The top 5 or so privates in DC have about 25% of kids on financial aid (of varying amounts). Compare that to top private colleges where the number is generally over 50%. Here are stats from some private school re: percentage of kids receiving financial aid: Amherst: 57% Williams: 50% Pomona: 58% Swarthmore: 52% Colgate: 48% |

Colleges have much bigger endowments and donations from a bigger student body. I've read so many complaints against the private schools about the cost when it should really be against public schools for the quality. I think most of the people who read these boards are parents who care about their children's education. That's half the battle because you do care and you can set the example for achievement. I think today more than ever there are options to improve and supplement one's education online.
