Don't know. But no sensible person would argue that Ohio State, Washington, or Wisconsin are "better" than UVa.

Not sure about Ohio State but Washing and Wisconsin are certainly equal or better than UVA overall (especially outside of VA and in other countries).

Sorry you didn't get in.

I got into a better one.

OK then.

I think it is common knowledge in the academic world that the best US public universities are: Berkeley, UCLA, Washington, Michigan, and the newly developed UCSD.

How about Wisconsin?

The U.S. Rankings seem to be more of a popularity contest. Many of the public universities do well on a global basis because they have been well respected around the world for a long time especially for their research.

Absolutely! This global list may not be good enough, but their domestic rankings are much more flawed against public universities without considering the bigger contributions by these public schools to the society and the mankind as a whole.

Isn't the UK considered Western Europe?

Oh yes, they would. UVA is good for some arts subjects and business, but is way behind Wisconsin or Washington in STEM. Wisconsin is a serious school and the faculty is much much better than at UVA. But they let more students in each year, so they get a wider cross-section of students in terms of ability.

William and Mary is sui generis. It is what it says it is: the best small public university in the country.

Isn't anything that's sui generis the best in its class?

In other words, they are much easier to get into. Someone here sure has an ax to grind about Va public schools.

I guess it's true what people outside of VA say about UVA.

And UMD is 41!

The ranking gods have spoken.
