Easy peasy. Should I keep going? I always get stuck on East Carolina though.

Are you kidding? It's basic geographical knowledge. And why would they deem it important enough for the AAP kids to learn, but not Gen Ed?

No. I'm not kidding. AAP kids don't need it either. They will never, ever again be asked for that information. Geography teacher porn.

Social studies teacher here. Students should understand why we have capitals and what is their function. Their names can be looked up.

Geography major here with 15 years of working full time with maps.
Just took online test and missed 10/50 so don't feel bad.

How pathetic that some of you actually believe Google is a substitute for actually knowing geography. Few things demonstrate ignorance more acutely than trying to have a conversation with someone who has no idea where anything is located.

Knowing geography involves so much more than simply identifying a place on a map. You have to know something about history and culture as well. The kids who impress me the most are the ones who compete in Geography Bees - schoolwide on up to the National Geographic Bee. These kids have such a vast range of knowledge - the questions they answer deal with economics, history, language, science, culture, politics, and current events. If you don't know geography, chances are you don't know much about any of those subjects.

Google will never take the place of actual knowledge.

Memorizing capitals indicates almost nothing about understanding geography.

It's a good start. See PP's post listing all the cities people actually think are capitals of states. Ignorance abounds.

Memorization makes many kids who enjoy learning think they don't like learning.

+1 And I loved learning them as a kid, but seriously, who needs to know that the capital of South Dakota is Pierre? The only time the capital of Illinoii was ever useful (it's Springfield) was in watching The Good Wife. Totally useless.

As about algebra, basic US history, statistics, writing skills. This is silly.

Ladies and gentleman, may I present the living embodiment of a dumbass.

When their parents teach it to them. Then eventually they see it on a test at school -- grade varies by locality.

Wrong. There are many kids who love knowing things, DS included.

Please. Elucidate the importance of memorizing state capitals for us?

That's great for your son and others like him.

Doesn't make me wrong.
