Am I the only one who prefers carpet?

I especially love carpet in the bedroom. Soft, cozy, comfy.

I haven't had cable in years, and even when I did, I watched zero shows on hgtv, but I prefer hardwoods. I like the way it looks and it's easier to keep clean. I'd also be ok with really nice tile floors, but I do really love the look of hardwoods. It has nothing to do with what anyone else likes.

Why I don't like carpet: if there is a spill, it's harder to clean. Much harder. If it doesn't get cleaned properly, it will smell and/or you will have to see the stained carpet. If you get it wet, it's hard to get it dry, but not with hardwood floors. There are many other reasons, but not because I'm a sheep. How odd to think that.

Right, sure.

We have allergies and it has always been our dream to have a house with no carpet and fewer dust mites. Huge priority for us. The houses in the DC metro are so old, the only redeeming quality for me are the hardwood floors.

My grandmother also prefers carpet

Beautiful, clean, light colored carpet is nice if you feel like it is so clean you can roll on it BUT: it
- for yourself: is a nightmare to keep that way, it looks gross in a second, it quickly get a faint smell you don't necessarily notice but others will, in the summer it is too warm
- to someone else it always looks gross, think your private towel in the bathroom: even if it looks clean the only way I am going to think it is clean is if I KNOW it is just out of the laundry..

The gross factor of the carpet is the problem...

We have hardwood on our main level (living, dining, kitchen), and carpet upstairs where the bedrooms are. We also have carpet in our finished basement. We don't plan to move in the foreseeable future, so we just did want was most comfortable for us.

I would agree hardwood is loud since noise travels everywhere, but I still prefer it over carpet. Area rugs and runners cut down on noise. People say rugs everywhere are silly, but it's quite easy to remove a rug and clean it well vs a carpet.

We have hardwoods but very nice Oriental rugs in every room. I love that combo.

Ha! Thanks for that.
I'm the OP of the hallway runner thread. I like the look of hardwood floors, but they're so loud and uncomfortable, so the only option is to cover them with rugs, thus negating the idea of hardwood floors (in my opinion). We inherited a bunch of antique oriental rugs and I hate that look. That, to me, is what grandma's house looks like. I do understand the gross factor of someone else's wall-to-wall carpet. Oh well. We're not moving anytime soon. Maybe I'll do it in the bedrooms and hallway.

There are too many practical reasons to prefer hardwood over carpet for your suspicion to make sense, from cleanliness to allergies to offgassing. Has nothing to do with HGTV for me. If there are any non-rational reasons for my preference it would be the fact that I grew up in early 1900s Berlin apartments that always had hardwood.

FYI -- hardwood off-gases too. Stop acting like your floors are so clean and healthy you eat off them!
