The entire grade. |
...after they've had 2 chances to get at least 60% on the same exam... |
Or they might have been the victims of the data person ... |
Completely false. There are no 14 or 15 year olds in the 6th grade sections at BASIS. |
If they repeated 6th twice, they would be 12 or 13. |
My DC is a rising 7th grader and knows between 15 and 20 kids that have repeated at least once and at least 5 that have repeated twice. His section has about 25 or more kids, but he knows kids in the other 4 (?) sections. He says he knows the ones that have repeated twice because they are the most disruptive and always being sent to the Dean's office. |
All people who have stayed back have had their comps triple checked. The person who was asked to stay back that passed one of her makeup comps had other comps she failed, and stayed back because of them. |
| JSYK, even DCPS has certain grade levels students are required to pass to ensure you don't have a child who cannot read or do basic math at an elementary level. 3rd and 9th are two such grades, not sure what other ones there are. |
I've wondered this myself, PP. I always assumed that most parents would withdraw rather than have their child retained once, and all parents would withdraw if there child was retained a second time. I was wrong, though. Some parent will allow their child to repeat the same grade multiple times. Perhaps these parents recognize that their child is not destined to graduate from high school. Perhaps they've concluded that a solid education followed by dropping out in "eighth" grade is better than a mediocre education followed by dropping out in 10th or 11th. |
If you are failing 3 years running, you are not getting a solid education, regardless of the quality of the school or teachers. |
| Maybe the repeaters are playing the lottery and not getting in anywhere better so they stick with BASIS. If you lose in the lottery and don't consider your IB school an option, repeating at BASIS may be your best bet, even though it is suboptimal. |
| Hardy is a great middle school option, with a lot less work for kids who are challenged at every level. |
|
Part of the challenge could be that, by the time you have failed a class and/or comp, the lottery has closed and your only option might be your IB.
Doesn't explain the multi-year scenario though. |
You do know that Indian families are included in the "Asian" category, right? That includes Korean, Indian, Chinese, etc. There's also widespread support of Buxiban, Hagwon and Indian exam coaching centers. That plays into who gets into and excels at TJ as well. |
| Of course Indians (from India, not Native Americans) are Asian. What is your point? I didn't see anyone else mention Indians. |
