SELT letter

My feeling is that many camp experiences really are learning experiences as well . . . things like cooking camp, robotics camp, chess camp, crafts at any camp, computer camp, etc. all provide opportunities to read and/or think in ways that are "learning". Plus they are much less like traditional "school" and more fun. I would put my kid in these kinds of camps in order to give them experiences and possibilities to learn through more "applied" activities.

And, if your kid is more field oriented, he/she probably needs the break from school and will probably get a lot of self esteem through sports or team sports type of camps.

Most SELT camps are for 2 weeks. If your child was severely behind academically, you'd still skip a free half day camp to provide tutoring? Summer is long enough to do both. SELT also should be more geared to people without the means to provide their own tutoring.

Posting again because in all fairness, I should tell you they did other things too. I got some coloring pages and drawings sent home (nothing else) and they have watched some cartoon videos.DC says they do some school skills too, like reading using a computer or something and worksheets. As far as I know my kid didn't fail several years of school, but maybe I should contact the teacher to find out. Oh wait, we not been given any contact information or any information at all about the mystery teacher.

Baha - sounds exactly like my DC's SELT experience last year. Yes, I cancelled a camp and forfeited the deposit so I could send him to "school" to color and play games. What a waste. We won't be doing it again.

It don't think it helps to know the grade. It's a reflection of the teacher and the person who runs the program. There is not a countywide curriculum for summer school. The teachers seem to be given the freedom to choose what programs they use, etc and I would assume/hope most of them handle that freedom very well. The freedom may allow them to be better teachers than they could be during the school year. Unfortunately, when a teacher doesn't handle the freedom appropriately and there is not adequate oversight this sort of thing can happen.

It makes a difference to me whether it's kindergarten or 3rd grade.

Based on what was shared it doesn't sound like it was K to me or even first.

It makes a difference to me whether it's kindergarten or 3rd grade.
