Bike commuting with kids - any tips?

Recommend in vesting in a cargo bike if you are going to be biking past Pk, and with more than one kid.

Brands include:
Yuba
Xtracycle.
Workcycle.

agree on investing in a cargo bike if you expect longer-term use. our kids got too big for a trailer when they were 3 and 5. we bought an Xtracycle and love it. you can get great rain gear to keep them dry on wet days and the kids love riding on the back. recommend test riding at Bicycle Space in DC. they are opening a new shop soon in Adams Morgan. And will have another spot on K st. for the moment, they're operating out popup space in chinatown. great, friendly staff.

WABA has regular classes on biking in the city.

Learn from my mistake and remember cargo bikes are bigger than regular bikes and won't fit in the same spot as your regular bike.

Just to be clear, I meant that my cargo bike did not fit in my bike shed I built for my regular bike.

My husband picks up our kids at least three days a week from daycare/school using a Chariot (I think they were bought out by Thule, sold at REI). First we had the single, then the double, now back to the single with the older one riding her own bike. Daycare is about 3 miles away, school about 3/4 mile. He thinks cars are more careful when they see the trailer (always with the orange flag flying) than when he is riding to them by himself. The kids love it and beg for it, even in bad weather. We like the idea of the steel frame trailer more than if you have a seat on your own bike. And the great thing is that now the older thinks biking is the only way to get around short distances, instead of a car.
