Work laptop stolen, boss is making me pay for replacement

Anonymous
OP, you need to shell out the money because it was your carelessness that caused the loss.

If you lost a laptop with confidential data, if you worked in my company, you would likely be let go.

My employer makes us buy the laptop, buy the smartphone, pay the data plan and they don't pay for us to drive to our client sites. Why? Because they can do whatever they want.

And you can do whatever you want and find a new employer if this doesn't suit you.

Believe me, I'm tryin'!

I think it was irresponsible of you, OP, but I don't think you should have to pay for it. (This is a cost of doing business the company should be prepared to shoulder.)

Will your homeowner's cover it?

As a business owner, I don't plan for theft of equipment due to employee carelessness.

OP, what I don't understand is why you didn't lie and say it wasn't visible?

What if it's stolen (heaven forbid) at gunpoint? Unless the employee is trained specifically to conceal work equipment, charging an employee a thousand dollars for another's crime seems draconian.

Some people are not yet inured to the toxic Washington tendency of "self-protection and promotion at all costs."

You sound very trusting OP. Are you from the Midwest and/or a recent transplant?

But you do plan for insurance.

This is a business expense. I have never worked anywhere that would make you pay for something like this. It was stolen, ffs!

When that happens, I'll think about it. I'm surprised you think not leaving valuables in plain sight in an unattended car requires specific training. It's common sense (which, apparently isn't so common) and there are frequent reminders, particularly around the holidays.

Of course, what's you're point?

You must have a shitty policy. My comprehensive insurance would cover a stolen laptop from a car, minus the $250 deductible.

In my company this has happened at least twice in the past few months. Employees don't pay and are issued a new laptop almost immediately.

What reasons do you have for buying insurance? Can you see where I'm going? You say you don't plan for theft due to employee carelessness, but you bought insurance, so obviously you DID PLAN for that.
