I love in a heavy SAHM area and even our was at night. The reason was that siblibgs (if any age) we not permitted to attend.

Live, not love.

I just want to sympathize with OP. When we started elementary school, it was a shock to our family too. In a different and much less dramatic way than having the first child impacts your daily life, but a big change nonetheless. Eventually you get used to it. I went P/T. I'm lucky I could. And I rarely, if ever, volunteer in the classroom. But, with all of the early dismissals, teacher workdays, snow days, snow delays, etc, on top of the in-school programs, etc., it would be hell to try to work my calendar around it if I were a F/T employee. (DH travels a lot and his schedule isn't very predictable.) My DC hasn't had a normal, full week of school since the week of Dec 8 (partly due to a family death). This week is likely to be our first full week since then.

Newport News has a before/after school program for only $75/week that has been excellent. They play sports or crafts (whatever their cup of tea is) and socialize and it is held at my son's school. They are also open for days off, half days, and early dismissals. Granted, snow days aren't the issue here they are up North, but I can say I haven't had to take a single hour off work to accommodate school. I did take the day after Thanksgiving, the week before Christmas, and a half day early in the year, but it was by choice. I can't imagine Fairfax or wherever y'all are from doesn't offer something similar. Much cheaper than a babysitter and the kids stay active.

Honestly, this is why a lot of SAHMs still SAH, even after their kids start school.

Ask other parents in the neighborhood what "orientation" really is. It's probably very worth going to, but ask around to be sure. Our kindergarten "open house" was pretty useless. Teacher hid in the back of the classroom, students ran around the classroom. All it did for me was raise questions and concerns. Thought the school year would be terrible. It was ok. It's just there was NO reason to have the event.
