I am an NC State alum. I grew up in NC. My college roommate was from NoVA. It was actually cheaper for her to attend NC State than Virginia Tech. It was also a shorter drive to Raleigh than Blacksburg. (I know your question wasn't about VT, but she wasn't considering UMD and her choice was between NC State and VT.)

Another vote for NC State. Love seeing all the love on this board for my alma mater.

OP, has your child made a decision? I definitely would suggest a campus tour.

UMD is ranked a lot higher, but I'm sure nc state is fine.

The decision has been made and it's NC State. We went back and revisited NCST, UMD, PENN ST and DC just really liked NC State the best. The new $115 million engineering library in addition to all the other brand new engineering buildings really pushed it over the decision over the top. The library is straight out of the Jetsons! The rankings of most of the programs he was interested in were all very similar and the location in the research triangle makes cooping and internships very easy to obtain. Plus it's warmer than PA and he felt like UMD was a bit to close to home. DC is happy so we are happy!

That engineering library was funded by the NC legislature. Sure they are having cuts but your kid will be fine. NC state is well funded!

How long ago? Why are they after UNC and not State?
