State of the Union - why does everyone applaud every time President says something?

What I cannot remember is the level of jeering, boos and sarcastic applause Obama's SOTU elicits from the Right.

Let's use Joe Wilson as an example. You are more concerned that he was rude, even though it's since been proven Wilson was correct?

Please cite why Wilson was correct. IIRC, he was insisting that illegal immigrants would be eligible for health insurance under the ACA.

In fact, Wilson was seeing the writing on the wall, that Obama planned a messive amnesty which would make current illegals eligible for health care.

Joe Wilson was *not* correct. Illegal aliens are *not* eligible for government-funded medical benefits under the ACA.

Yet they are getting covered. Fancy that.

I'm going to need to source for that.

The Daily Caller doesn't count.

Pick any mainstream source, especially city newspapers, that admits the site allowed illegals to enroll and now the government has to go back and hopefully fix the problem. now add to that all illegals who have fraudulent documentation they used to get work. They can enroll using that documentation.

If the government has to work to kick illegals off the rolls who weren't supposed to be able to register, then they were able to register.

If this is so obvious, one would think you could actually post something yourself.

Delivered with unveiled hatred. Look at his face - wow

Obama unmasked...

Oh, puhhh-lease. We have the far right extremists in Congress attacking Obama daily, full of hatred, vitriol, and lies about Benghazi and Death Panels, yet when he zings them back with a little comedy, suddenly it's "Oh, look at the angry black man full of hatred!"

That wasnt comedy. There was no glint in his eye, no smile. That was a comment delivered with malice by a President who intends to ignore congress and do what he wants.

Why shouldn't he ignore Congress? They are ignoring him, so it's only fair that he return the favor.

Why shouldn't we start killing each other? We all hate the other side. Let's get it overwith.

Let's just stick with the sheeple comments. It rings true.

They aren't supposed to enroll , but they do. The administration does not enforce laws they don't like. Joe Wilson was more than right, because not enforcing laws on purpose is tyranny, not just lying. I certainly hop a future GOP president does the same with tax law and EPA laws so that democrats get an understanding of the issue.

Joe Wilson was more than right. Could you imagine how rude it would have been if he yelled "Obama is not going to enforce laws he disagrees with!"
People would have said he was crazy!

Joe Wilson was and still is a rude, clueless asshole who had no idea what he was saying back then, nor does he now. Trying to claim he was some kind of fucking Nostradamus is just plain asinine.

I believe I posted a link to the Oregon story earlier in the thread. It basically says that although illegals aren't technically covered, the websites did not properly screen for ID (how basic is THAT) and illegals got covered. So now they are supposed to go through and eliminate them.

So in other words, it works like immigration - let them in, and then 'deport' them.

California also is looking for a back door to insure illegals.

Joe Wilson knew this - he saw the writing on the wall. It's really hard not to.

There was most definitely a smile on his face. NO malice.

Absolutely he was rude. Congress is an institution. It isn't about party. He cheapened the institution and it doesn't matter if the President is R or D or right or wrong.

You can call him rude, but you can also call him correct. Personally, I find lying to the American people much more important that the reputation of the institution. By lying, Obama already had cheapened the institution - he didn't need Wilson's help on this.

You are very shortsighted and from my perspective, a complete moron. Congress is an institution. It's bigger than any one person. Why is that hard for you to understand. I'm not here to say whether Obama lied, but we know that Bush did! Did anyone yell out KILLER? People died for these institutions. The foundation of our government is dependent upon our understanding that these places are sacred. It is a shame that you are so low class and uneducated, you don't understand this. Must be a trailer park Republican.

Wow, this is so weird - you attack me because Joe was right about what he said? I'm sorry that Obama lied to y'all about Obamacare, that they out-and-out stated that y'all needed to be lied to because you were too stupid to see that you needed this law to pass.

I would say that any 'intellectual' who calls their own voter base stupid, is not terribly intellectual after all. And certainly not a nice person to boot.

I don't think he lied, you do. What is there to argue. I think you are obsessed with something that means nothing in my life. The Hill means a lot to me. I worked there. I have been to a state of the union address. You clearly have not.

The other part is members of the president's party applauding or giving a standing ovation and the other side stays seated and does not applaud.

True. The speechwriters write the SOU speech in sound bites. Each sentence then is marked with hashmarks. One hashmarks means pause and wait for applause. Two means pause pause, wait for applause, three means hold your breath and wait for lots of applause and clapping. The supporting party knows this and knows when to just politiely applaud and when to go crazy. It's nonsense but it's just the way it's done - wife of former WH speechwriter.

How long has this been the practice. So annoying. One of the reasons I don't watch anymore. [/quote]

At least back through Reagan. If you see the original of some of the SOU addresses, the text is typed (yes, really hand-typed), then slashes are made indicating length of pause at the end of a sentence of phrase. The speech has been vetted by just about every member of the Cabinet (which is why you get such a garbled mess of stuff, sometimes - everyone wants their "issue" packed into the SOU), and then rehearsed by mere mortals. Blue or red pencil slashes indicate pause. One slash - slight pauses, etc. up to three slashes. Then it goes to the President for rehearsal and often he readjusts slashes and pauses.
