VII. GIFTS TO SCHOOL SYSTEM EMPLOYEES
Students and their parents shall be discouraged from the routine presentation of gifts to school system employees on occasions such as Christmas. A school system employee shall not accept an elaborate or expensive gift even if a student should feel a spontaneous desire to offer one. The School Board shall consider as always welcome, and in most circumstances more appropriate, the writing of letters to staff members expressing gratitude or appreciation. No school system employee shall solicit, demand, accept, or agree to accept any gift or valuable benefit of more than nominal or minimal value (including commissions, fees, discounts, rebates, special privileges, and the like) from any person selling or seeking to sell goods or services to the school system or to students as part of a program organized by the school system (such as from a vendor of band instruments or gym uniforms).

Thank you. I will pass it along to the room parents soliciting and giving over $100 gifts. Teacher’s favorite gift is a spa treatment (in her own words)

Is fcps one of the only school districts without a gift limit in this area? What do people typically give?

A $100 gift from the class could fit within those guidelines, no? I wouldn’t say that’s elaborate or expensive from an entire class.

They were individual gifts. One of the parents gave her a $150.

Preach! No teacher touches the home made stuff, it goes right in the trash. Don't waste your time/money on ingredients.

Folders are red
Gift cards are blue
Parent’s time and wallet are too precious
To be wasted on you

We typically give a gift card from the entire class, out of the class funds that parents contributed to at the beginning of the year. If you think about a $100 gift card from 28 students, it's not that crazy (roughly $3/student). The combined effort makes all the difference.

Our school also pairs us with a specialist, and we typically also give them a gift card, although not for the same amount as they are not the primary interaction with the class.

I always suggest a handwritten note or card as well. Teachers in the past have told me to communicate their "likes," should parents want to give something extra. For example, one teacher was trying a healthier approach and asked that I let parents know she'd prefer trail mix or a simple snack/granola bar instead of a box of chocolates.

We eat everything the kids bring in -- home made or store bought. If a staff member doesn't want it themselves, they just put it on a table in a workroom and it gets eaten.

I don't want any E coli, salmonella, unrecognizable food crap from any of my grubby students.

That shizit goes straight into the trash.

I won't even taste.

What are parents thinking. With all the CDC warnings, I am going to take a chance on some Saran wrapped, pasty foodstuff???? Hell to the naw.

Do like the pp. Take it to the teacher's lounge. I guarantee it will be eaten. ALL of it.

Fairfax county is very large. I’m particularly interested in what’s typically done in McLean. It’s our first year at this school. I’m not close enough yet to any of the other parents to ask. Does anyone know what is typically given?

I can say that circa 2006, our FCPS early grade teacher raked in over $1000 as a class gift in the form of an Apple gift card.

All from the class parents. Vienna.

I’m a high school teacher and appreciate everything. We do not receive as much as elementary teachers and I agree that the handwritten cards or emails are the best. I also admit that I am thrilled with the occasional gift card. Large amounts would make me uncomfortable and I’ve never received an expensive handbag.

As for someone asking about gifts in exchange for recommendations, I don’t see how this would be possible. Students asked me for college recommendations at the end of last year or the very beginning of this year. Mine were all due in October. No one has ever offered a beginning of the year gift card in exchange for a recommendation. Obviously that would not be accepted.

In McLean, depend on which school, it can be way over the top. Most organized roomparents set up a fund at the beginning of the year to cover Christmas, birthday, teacher appreciation week and end of year gifts. Then people still give the teacher gifts on their own for these occasions. Depending on your budget, I think mostlike a card to Sweet Leaf that is enough for a salad and a drink. They get tons of Starbucks cards.
