On what basis? How do they even know who exists and why they want to invite them to join? Are all the members politicians or prominent lobbyists, doctors, law firm partners? (Obviously I am not a country club person. Also female so even if I were POTUS, would not get an invitation.)

I also wonder what the point is of a country club but that's for another thread ...

You don't know anyone featured in the social pages do you.

Snappy comeback.

Criteria, OP?

I mean the most respected overall, hardest to get into. Just generally considered the most prestigious and exclusive.

No, of course I don't. That's why I'm asking; it's a totally foreign world to me and I'm curious. I guess you've answered my question, sort of.

Little to do with the social pages.

It's like any club - a group of people with similar interests - golf, tennis, drinking, eating and socializing.

You can do any of these things without belonging to a club but there is a comfort you get that you don't find in a public setting. I would say it is somewhat like buying a house in a neighborhood vs renting and apartment.

Based on what you said, OP, it would have to be The Chevy Chase Club.

Chevy Chase Club has the most exclusive reputation, then Congressional. For people who care a lot about golf, they usually go with Congressional. We have friends at most of the clubs in town and they do all seem to have a different feel to them. I have to say the place I feel least at home is Chevy (obviously we are not members). I have to say my friends at BCC seem to really enjoy it and it seems more laid back. Kenwood's facilities are a bit lacking but people are nice. Columbia is very Catholic and people seem to have grown up with each other. Nothing wrong with that, but it is part of the feel of the club. Hope that helps!

Didn't mean to write "I have to say" twice in my above post. Sounds kind of pretentious!

^ Thank you, PP. This is very helpful. I definitely have a lot of Catholic friends at Columbia, so that makes sense. But why doesnt Chevy feel comfortable?

HaHa. Top 10 perhaps, but definitely not top 5.

Does Burning tree even count?

And I heard someone on here saying that they drove through burning tree and saw a bunch of old men playing golf with their shirts off. Not exactly top quality country club material to me

but you won;t see any women there doing that.

If women were ever allowed to golf there, maybe they would.

When it comes to social ills that I get worked up about, like extreme poverty, dictatorship and disease, all-male exclusive golf clubs just don't get me very excited. Let the old goats go off and whack their balls around.

This.

What are your goals? Status, political networking, quality of people, commercial contacts, or just a good place to be apart from the other parts of your life?
