S/O - why ask for an attorney before speaking to police?

NP - you aren't entitled to a public defender until you're charged. And the police aren't the ones who provide it -- that's the court system's job.

Could be that, just like you did not know how it works, maybe he did not either.

The police wanted to speak to him so he went to the station. He spoke to them and then asked for an attorney. He had not been charged with a crime so no public defender was provided. The police probably made it obvious they thought he had something to do with her disappearance and that made him ask for an attorney. Also, he went with family members so maybe they told him to get an attorney.
