Tell me about Lafayette's aftercare program

LAP doesn't serve all that many students, given the size of the enrollment.

PP, do you have numbers/experience to share on that?

LAP currently serves 200 kids. There are 750 kids at Lafayette, but I don't know how many of them would want LAP if it were available.

In the old school they had a large room for LAP only, and they had a lot of things there for the kids to use and do when they couldn't be outside. And there was a separate space for the really little kids. Now, LAP is roaming between the playground, cafeteria (which is insanely noisy) and the multipurpose room. The new school is so spacious I really don't understand why LAP didn't get its own space.

Also to echo PPs, LAP is independent of the school and DCPS. It is sanctioned by both, and coordinates with Lafayette and the principal, but not controlled or funded by DCPS or Lafayette.

I think there is interest in expanding LAP, but without dedicated space and more staff, it's unclear how that can happen.

I would also be surprised about a dedicated room that was more than just an office. Why can't the program just use existing classrooms?

+1. Our ETOP DCPS has plenty of kids in aftercare, and using existing classrooms is key. They could never fit them all into one dedicated space.

How much rent does DCPS charge your after care provider?

How much rent is DCPS charging Janney's aftercare program?

Guys, there are more factors at play here.
1) the gym is not yet operational- meaning LAP can't use it at the moment, causing a space crunch
2) classrooms are being used by LEP, so LAP has limited space in those as well
3) LAP's enrollment was increased from last year because it thought it would have the gym -- so it's got a bigger enrollment and less places to put people in general.

Everyone needs to hang on a few more months to see if stuff gets ironed out. If it doesn't, complain away.

Also important to note that LAP is not run by Lafayette or DCPS. LAP is a separate non-profit.

Janney is not bigger than Lafayette. Yet they make it work. Lafayette is brand new. Lots of square footage they should be able to address the needs of families where both parents work, as does Janney.

How many kids does Janney's aftercare program serve? (Not the enrichment classes, but the aftercare that goes until 6)

What specific to Lafayette does not allow it to get as many kids into aftercare? Why can another comparable school in size location etc (Janney) figure it out and Lafayette cannot?

It isn't space, it is staffing.

We couldn't see doing the aftercare in the dark old facilities. Our friends used CCBC on the circle

Staffing? I don't think so ask the head of LAP she can get more staff. Somehow it sounds like a space issue. Doesn't really make sense as it is a brand new building.

Not quite fair - the kids spend as much time as possible outside and in the old building LAP made the best of their space - kids seemed all pretty happy.
