FWiW, I was out on my own renting in my early 20's. I may(?) have put my parents down as an emergency contact, I don't remember. But I would have been MAD if my landlord had contacted them about my rent payment.

So what if you're "mad?" If I'm the landlord, I'm MAD that you owe me money.

I say call. This person has been living rent free in your home and writing you checks that aren't good. Just be careful when you call. Claim you haven't heard from the tenant or something like that. The after that say you wonder if it has to do with the fact they are way behind in rent. This way you can claim you called bc it's an emergency. Get the money this person owes you.

Also. If they can't pay their rent what is the chance they spend thousands on a lawyer to sue? I realize the dad is a lawyer but that seems a bit silly. You could always claim you called the wrong number or got confused. Heck, you looked at the info you had written down and thought you were calling the tenant

As a landlord, even if the father wasn't listed as a contact for the rent, I would still call him if I had the number somewhere - whatever it takes to get the rent!

As a parent, I would like to know whether my children had trouble with the rent. Depending on circumstances, I might pay... or not.

"Children" don't pay rent. They live with their parents. Adults pay rent. Or deal with the consequences when they don't.
