Do many more kids go to overnight camps these days?

Anonymous
Oh, I don't think I could consider the whole summer until my child was at least 11 or 12. And a year or two after that, she can start doing CIT at the local day camps. I think a week or two is the most she is ever going to go away for.

Plus, we probably just don't have the money for a whole summer away, anyway.

I think a week or so at a time is good for teaching independence.

Is that you speaking or her speaking? Obviously from a financial standpoint, it's you. But about considering it....and why couldn't hs be a CIT at the sleepaway camp?

I guess it all boils down to finances in the end from my perspective. I MIGHT consider a longer sleepaway CIT experience as long as it doesn't cost a pretty penny.

But she is currently 8 and not a big fan of being away from home for very long. We shall see how things go over the next few years. Plus, her daddy is pretty protective and doesn't feel sleepover camp is as worthwhile as I think it is.

I think in the DC area, most of the kids are tied to swim team in July and family vacations in August.

It's the only way for my H and me to vacation... It's our "nanny".

Also everyone went for eight weeks. The idea of one week here and two weeks there is completely foreign to me. My kids go for 8 weeks. I can't understand all these people constantly going to the beach and on all these various trips. We have to work.

Have you found a true 8 week camp experience? Most of the sleep away camps I've looked into offer a 4 week and a 3 week session but not a 7 or 8 week experience.

Look at Maine and Adirondack camps. Most camps there are 7 weeks. it is pretty exoensive. Typically $10,000-$12,000 for the summer not including transportation and extras.

Many kids in the Bethesda/Potomac area/NW DC areas go away to camp. It it fairly cultural. If you grew up going to camp (many in the NY/NJ did) you tend to send your kids.

Many in this area tend to do swim team/country clubs/beach vacation in August.

Depends on your group of friends and the people in your circle.

This whole thread makes ME want to go to camp. I loved it as a kid, and if hope I'm able to send my boys once they're old enough.

Can you expand on this? What are the reasons that you wold never send your child to sleep away camp? Or that it reflects on what type of parent you are?

Don't make your kid's first experience away from home when they go off to college. I went to camp for 3-4 summers and I loved it. You just can't do that variety of activities at home. Plus, kids need to learn some independence. When I went to college, so many kids had never been away from home before. My son loves camp and can't wait to go each summer. Plus, it's the only break from him I get all year so it's a win win situation.

I've looked at it and it looks awesome. I have the DVD and brochure sitting on my desk. I may take DD up to visit this summer. But honestly, it looks more like a country club than summer camp. I've seen a few if the videos that they've posted for breaking color war and it just seems a bit over the top. I have the names and numbers if a few people from the area who attend. I should give them a call to talk about my concerns. Perhaps they're unfounded.
