we were paying about $150/month w/o teenager, went to $199/month with teenager but no 3rd car and $279 with 3rd car. We were with Nationwide but they wanted $660/ month with the 3rd car. We switched all our insurance to Geico. We had to because they wouldn't allow us to have an umbrella policy w.o car insurance. We also have a $1000 deductible on our cars which keeps costs down. New cars cost more to insure because the are worth more. Add in the teenager and you get the higher costs. Having an older car, in most cases, you are deciding between better safety features, repair costs and reliablity (different for different cars) vs higher insurance costs. For us, safety and realiability won out. http://www.dmv.org/insurance/teen-guide-to-car-insurance.php Here are some other ideas to help lower costs. |
Thanks, something to consider. With USAA, we are paying more but the deductible is $250 and we have really high limits that double in certain circumstances. In all likelihood, we are over-insured and when we added DS, we just duplicated the coverage DH and I have. Maybe I should call Geico to price shop

Can't hurt. If you can save a decent amount, it may be worth it. Just be prepared that you may have to move homeowners as well because you loose certain bemefits by not having all insurance together. We had to and it worked out well. No increase, even a slight decrease. It saved us $3600 total to move from Nationwide to Geico. (and no I don't work for Geico just did not want to pay the large increase) |
