| "Courtesy" of a thank you note is not indicative of professional finesse and skill with clients. JEEBUS, does anyone know how to interview and assess how a candidate will actually perform their work? |
I totally agree - new poster |
| I expect a thank you for an informational interview done as a favor. Otherwise, I think it is unprofessional to send personal correspondence in response to a business meeting. Unless you have something to actually add to the conversation, let it go. Those of you who expect them seem unprofessional. |
Do you thank people for documents, etc that they send to you at the office, at your request? Honest question. |

My first-ever hire sent me a lovely thank you note after the interview. She accepted the job (a summer internship). Then the week before she was supposed to start, she found something else she wanted to do for the summer and told us she wasn't coming. We were left hanging. I've been a bit jaded about thank you notes ever since.
Also, this was just a phone interview. I can't imagine expecting a note from that. |

OP, I'm with you. I always thought thank you notes conveyed courtesy and professionalism. I guess I need to get with the times.
So...since most of you find thank you notes lame, would you factor this into your decision when considering a candidate? Would you decide NOT to hire someone who sent a thank you note because the person appeared desperate and needy? |
It's a PHONE interview. Do you really think talking to someone on the phone requires that? |
| I receive a thank you note maybe 30-40% of the time I interview someone. Maybe if I got one 95% of the time I would think there's something odd about the other 5%. But the numbers aren't even close to that. |
| Who the heck sends thank you notes after a phone interview? You've got to be kidding me. Candidates usually send them after a freaking face to face interview. Who do you think you are that you are expecting to be thanked for talking to someone on the phone? I feel sorry for the people who work for you! |
Ok, psycho (not OP). She said most did and a lot here agree, so it's not so out there. You seem unhinged. |
| When I was in law school there was a firm I particularly wanted to work for. After my day of interviews I sent thank you notes to all ten or so people I met, had lunch with, etc. I wasn't offered the position. I called the recruitment coordinator and asked for feedback. She said some of the people commented I sounded "canned." I gave up my thank you notes and my glossy preparedness and began shooting more from the hip. I got more offers. |
not PP, yes it is out there no one does that, unless they are desperate or new at this thing

Except for 3/5 people in the initial post, and half the posters on this thread. Which apparently is what you define as "no one." |
| I don't think most of the posters were responding to the phone screen part of it. |
