Lewis Latimer--the Black Man Who Helped Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell

He was recognized for his accomplished. Placed in the inventors hall of fame. If that is insufficiently fair, how can we change that?

Latimer wrote or helped to write the patent for the telephone. He did not invent it. He did invent lots of other things and helped other great inventors with their work also and he has been given credit for all of this.

OP here:

Very few people know his name.

I didn't know of him until a few months ago. And I'm an adult.

I'm sure there are a slew of other great inventors of all races that many of us don't "discover" until later in life, if it all. That doesn't take away from the fact that Latimer HAS been inducted the inventor hall of fame, and has proper bio on various websites, and I assume he is also featured in a number of books. I imagine that's how you learned of his achievements in the first place.

OP, a lot of people know his name. I'm 45 and have known of him all of my life. Where have YOU been? Don't project your ignorance on everyone else.

All I will say is that this thread is constructive in that it did give attention to a great inventor and someone who contributed to the conviences that we enjoy today. He was a great American. For those who did not know of Mr. Latimer, hopefully you learned something. If you already knew of him, hopefully it was a nice refresher for you.

Too bad that people, on both sides, had to take this thread to a negative competitive place.

I wonder how old he was in the OP photo.

LET US NOT FORGET that Lewis Latimer was the one who actually invented the Incadesent LIGHT BULB, not Edison!! Lewis Latimer like Nikola Tesla were both exploited by Edison. Latimer and Tesla became friends during their time together in Edison’s lab. I wish that Latimer had left Edison like Tesla did, who knows what all else he could have created if not under the thumb of Edison.
