S/O too much homework: how many hours does your kid have per night?

In MCPS you literally need 1 class to graduate once you are a senior.

The only way this is true is if your kid has no plans to go to college.

There's no way they need to take 7 PAs either (that's total BS).

Signed Also a MCPS mom.

First MCPS mom here. But if he wants to, why is it our business?

Its a discussion we are not saying no kids whould ever do this. But it does not seem the kid wants to take these classes but he is being told to for college acceptance.

10th grader at a private Catholic high school in the Midwest. We are DC natives that left 2 years ago. My DS has about 2 hours of HW per night and another 3-4 hours on the weekend. DS takes Math and English this semester at local University and the balance of his classes at the high school. He will graduate in 2016 with a minimum of 36 credits of college completed at zero cost to us.

He is also a 3 sport varsity athlete (football, wrestling and golf) so he has practice for something every night and on Saturday mornings.

High school doesn't have to be a living hell. It can actually be quite enjoyable.

You are clearly completely ignorant about how useless homework is. Might want to read something about that before you post stupid comments.

Are you seriously arguing that students:
1. Should never write papers outside of class time?
2. Should never read novels outside of class time?
3. Should never read a history textbook, monagraph, or primary source document outside of class?
4. Should not work on practicing their grammar or vocabulary in a foreign language?
5. Should not practice math or physics problems sets outside of class?

Please don't change the topic. The question is, how many hours of HW per night, what grade, what school. There is another threat on the value or lack of value of homework. Please post there is you want to argue. Please post here to answer the questions.

It's the internet. If I question the premise of your anonymous thread, I'm going to anonymously post something that conveys my skepticism. It's relevant by my lights. If it's not relevant by yours . . . well, it's the internet, and you started an anonymous thread.

You're right, PP, the Internet enables you to be an a**hole. It does not require you to be an a**hole, however. You made your point. Now please go away.

I'm guessing you are a scold all the time, not just on the internet. Lol. How's the censoring going today?

Don't take seven AP classes -- or seven classes, the majority of which are APs -- and then whine that the homework load is crushing. (Which is what is happening.)

Actually she didn't say that. She said it was 3-4 hours, which is pretty normal for an 11th/12th grader. Mine has 5 APs and it's manageable as well.

Previous post, on page 2 of this thread, said homework was 3-4 hours, and there wasn't any whining going on. Plus, this one kid is obviously such an outlier that it's hard to understand why you're so invested in scolding him.

I'm the PP who posted this about my 12th grader. Taking the APs was their idea, not mine, and they are doing fine with the workload. I never said the homework was crushing. It really depends on your child.

Please just post school, level and hours. I would really like to know:

Langley, senior, 5 hours minimum a night. Weekend also.

Anonymous wrote:A recent StA grad told me that in HS he was at school from 7:30-7 with sports and then had 4-5 hours of homework. Does this sound right?

Yes - get out at 7pm. Homework is about 2-3 hours for 10th grade.
Anonymous
Holton, 8th grade, 2-3 hours per night, 2-3 hours over the weekend.
Anonymous
Maret, 10th, 3 hours.

School says no more than 45 min per subject, but everybody has 5.

Five hours a night, seriously? That is a lot!

Anyone have a HS child in a place that does NOT require 3-5 hours of homework a night?
