6 Months Thread

How are your babies doing with babbling? My baby is now just over 7 months, and I'm kind of worried because he is still not babbling. He makes noises (like aaah), but no consonant sounds yet - do you think I should be worried? Do most babies babble by this stage?

Re supply: my ped definitely said she shouldn't be replacing milk with solids yet. my supply is doing okay right now, but DD is actually drinking more than she has before and I've had to start supplementing with a little formula; i refuse to stress about it. i don't know about "going to extremes" as you say, but perhaps focus on fenugreek supplements and a LOT of extra water. and more pumping time if you can.

Re babbling: DD just shrieked (mostly happily) and blew raspberries for months. last week (about 6.5 months), the babbling started! now she doesn't stop, except perhaps for a good happy shriek here and there.

Supply poster (and OP) here - thank you! I am stressing about it because I don't want to do formula. I would rather have my nanny add a meal of solids and move to 3 oz bottles (currently doing 3.5 oz) until I can get my supply back up. We are about to start four weeks of vacation, so hopefully around the clock nursing will help.

Re: babbling. My daughter shrieks like a mad woman and definitely babbles. Only "da da da" so far, which my husband LOVES.

So glad to see this thread. I came to Gen Parenting to vent about my six month old. Mine sleeps through the night and that is awesome. She is a pretty good baby but lately she must be entertained every minute of the day!!! I get three minutes tops before the incessant fussing starts and then I must pick her up or amuse her somehow. I'm flattered she likes my attention but I'd like to be able to eat something or answer an email. I was just about to lose my sanity today when my husband texted he is leaving an hour early. Hooray!! I can't wait for someone else to entertain her while I eat a sandwich.

Mine has been babbling for a while now. Talk to him a lot if you don't already and bring it up to the ped. It's probably nothing to worry about but you might as well put your mind at ease. And when he does make sounds, make a big fuss over it and talk back to him.

Re: babbling - def bring up with your pediatrician. I wish I had when my DS1 was this age. I have a DS2 who's 5 months and he has been babbling since 2 months. Our oldest - now 2yo - is doing speech therapy and the therapist says that he should've been babbling at a young age like my 2nd is now. It could be nothing but I really wish I had known what is common at the younger ages.

Our little one at his last appointment, 7 months, wasn't babbling. The ped said not to worry, just to work at it- talk constantly, read lots of stories, and he said make animal noises. Well 2 weeks later he just started- over night- and now def babbles! Still shrieks and still has times when he plays very quietly, but I wouldn't worry- everyone develops differently- just work on it! Good luck!
