Who do you find to watch your newborn infant for 14 days?? Wouldn't that be really expensive, a short term sitter for 14 days for a newborn? Or is her spouse supposed to take 14 days off to watch the baby?

Shit I would show up for duty eith my newborn and then explain that have no one to watch mybaby and I cant leave it home alone

DC has a childcare center for jurors, so they'd expect you to use that. Especially if you changed your jury duty to that date.

As a single self employed parent, I pay for childcare when I'm on jury duty, even though I'm not earning income during that time.

The childcare is only for potty-trained kids ages 2 & up, not infants.

Seems like the big issue is they can only let you know 10 days ahead of time if your deferrment was granted. I guess they aren't flexible on this? That seems sort of stupid if you ask me.

I was able to defer and choose a new date in DC online--check your summons for information on that. It seemed to be accepted automatically without a problem.

(It will be up to you whether you think its worse to defer when you have an infant. A judge won't usually excuse jurors for child care issues.) But at least you will know without having to cancel your vacation or wait until the last minute. Good luck!

Not sure this is accurate. I also receive a notice for jury duty when my DD was 2 weeks old. The court offers daycare for children 24 months and up. I called and explained that I had given birth 2 weeks prior and was deferred for two years.

Call them. Tell them you are pregnant and ask them if you can defer. The woman I spoke with was very nice.

Hey, just think of how unwalkable we here in suburbia have it and how you're so much better because you live in DC.

ha ha - is this sarcasm? It pinches! I'm not one of those DC or die people. We generally like the city (though I'm not in a particularly walkable area so I guess I lose twice. Ah well).
