What's been difficult for me (the downtown commuter) is imagining how life might look living further out, as I realize that having a non-tiny house might require it. In other words, my commute is the loser over space and schools/neighborhood, though if DH's commute is better than his current drive from Arlington, that's helpful.

It's tricky, though, because DH travels for work for up to a week a month, often without much warning. So, while he could do drop off/pick up if we lived closer to his office (I'm thinking the Fairfax or Herndon option), it could get really crazy during the times he's gone.

I noticed no one has mentioned Falls Church (not Falls Church City, but outside it like around Sleepy Hollow Road)...is that because there are fewer public transportation options from that area? Or the schools? I've poked around on Redfin there simply because it seems a "meet in the middle" area but it's hard to get a sense of the place.

She wants good schools so sleepyhollow doesn't fit the bill

Sleepy Hollow schools are fine. OP just won't find much there in her price range.

Meh. I just bought a house this week. I looked over there, south of 7 corners, near sleepy hollow road. The schools are really hit-or miss. One might be good; but the rest of the pyramid, not. LOTS of free lunches

Sheesh, if Fort Hunt is doable to Dulles, then so is Leesburg.

I'd look in 22042, OP. You would take the Dunn Loring Metro to work via the Orange Line, or the express bus up Rt. 50 to the Ballston Metro. Your husband would go to work on the Dulles Toll Road. Good Luck!

Here's a really cute house in Fox Mill within your budget and doesn't appear to need much work.

I used to drive on that street to get to my daughter's daycare provider's house. (she lived around the corner on Pinecrest).

Worth a look.
