$30K in debt for a degree that will net you more than that in the long run isn't really that bad actually.

Also, community college offers certificate and degrees in technical and vocational fields that will yield a mid level salary job fairly quickly such as dental hygiene, etc so the suggestion to go back to school is a good one but it does require some thought and planning.

Why do people with student loans think they are the ONLY ones with student loans? WTF? WHO is "supposed" to send your sorry ass to school??????

I don't get this at all. So what, you have student loans. Pay them off, suck it up and eat ramen like everyone else.

Would it help if you tried to see some of your thrifty buying as a choice vs. necessity? I am also a single mom and while I make more than you do, a huge chunk of that money goes to preschool and the mortgage on our (small, old) house. I drive a 9-year-old (not luxury) car and buy my daughter's clothes at consignment sales/shops and Target. I don't see the point of spending a ton of money on stuff she'll just outgrow. Maybe tell yourself that it's silly to spend a ton of money on a lot of the stuff people buy, and maybe that will help? Sorry.

Im 23. I would need my parents to qualify and that is a no-go. My financial aid is based on their income which effectively takes me out of the running for need based aid. I have debt from the semester I dropped out (I owe the money for that semester since I lost my scholarship). Im currently living on about half my income which isnt much at all and sending the rest to school each month hoping to have that bill paid off by the end of next year. Its really not as simple as "student loans". If it were, everyone who wanted to could go to college and that just not the case. I'd give my right arm to be in school right now.

Dare I ask what you majored in? Women's Studies, perhaps, or something equally worthless? Nurses do not have problems finding a job and excellent, experienced teachers rarely do. Maybe you need to move? There are jobs to be had but you have to go find them.

I agree. There are plenty of places in VA and MD, outside of the metro area, where one can live for a heck of a lot less.

My family member has a once a week housekeeper who lives in NoVA and drives to central VA to clean houses for people, which makes no sense to me. If she moved to the area where she works, she could have a nice home on a decent plot of land for $150k, and not have to commute or work as much to afford it. I don't know if family connections keep her in this area, but that would not be enough to prevent me from moving somewhere more affordable.

OP, I'm sorry, it must be a real struggle trying to afford things in this area.

I disagree, life is not cheaper in the far flung suburbs. Housing is slightly cheaper, cost of commuting is more. We pay the same for electricity, milk, gas and meat. Our neighborhoods are not as bad as the one closer in, that is in our price range, but this is it.
Your housekeeper most likely has other reasons to stay where they are. I do not undersyand why you need to be so judgemental.
The $150k housing is most likely as wonderful as you think
